Set in a historic building on one of the prettiest streets in Old Jaffa, Beit Kandinof is both contemporary art center and restaurant. Home to five galleries with ever-changing exhibitions from Tel Aviv's dynamic modern art scene, Beit Kandinof also houses artists of its own: chefs Yogev Yaros and Shami Golomb, masterminds behind an impressive menu that combines Mediterranean cuisine with Arabic Jaffa touches. The selection varies with the seasons, but best-selling staples include the spicy fava bean hummus and the slow-cooked lamb spare ribs.

Image everything that make Jaffa and the White City culturally unique: incredible museums, wild and wonderful art galleries, bustling bars, and chef quality restaurants. Now imagine them mixed together in a cultural melting pot, all under the same roof. This was the dream of power couple Amir Erlich and Arianna Fornaciai when they stumbled across the Jaffa palace-like building that once belonged to Aaron Kandinof, the son of the minister of finance of Muzaffar Khan, ruler of Bukhara.

Beit Kandinof is another bar-cum-art centre: by day it runs art classes and by night resident DJs entertain the crowds. The combination of creativity and cocktails is something that can only be found in Jaffa’s mixed and multicultural streets. It is also a great place to taste delicious Turkish and Moroccan dishes, such as fried cauliflower with mint and parsley or seared calamari with sumac.

A touch more traditional – although in an art-led way (the space is also a studio) – is Beit Kandinoff, where amid old stone walls and eye candy galore you’ll eat tuna ceviche loaded with mango curry, Thai basil, shiso and tapioca tuile; smoked eggplant and yoghurt dumplings with yoghurt, mint and chilli; or asado slow cooked in wine and pomegranate. Intimate and affordable, Dok is ideal for a low-key date night; and plates – made using grows from their own garden – have personality that belies the dining room size: orange-marinated-lamb tacos with cranberry and avocado leaves, hibiscus salt, habanero and calamansi; charcoal-roasted trout skewers in pomegranate syrup, barley and strawberry vinegar with burnt-onion cream; and mango in lavender-and-geranium syrup with honey tuile. For seafood and electric-blue views dine at Cassis on the coast, and blue-and-white Kalamata has fine iterations of all the dippy, picky and super-fresh of Greek cuisine.

Located in Tel Aviv’s oldest neighborhood, Jaffa, the majestic Beit Kandinof sits in a grand historic building and combines a restaurant, art gallery and event space. With a menu featuring farm-to-table ingredients, Beit Kandinof serves up whole fish with scordalia, citrus-glazed chicken with fermented red cabbage and other inventive Mediterranean-influenced dishes. Smoked eggplant and ricotta dumplings are served in yogurt with mint and chili butter.

For live music, it’s hard to beat Akbar, The Container, or Shaffa, while The Cuckoo's Nest and Beit Kandinoff are bars-cum-art galleries with a particularly fun atmosphere. Most bars offer Happy Hour deals, usually between 6 pm and 8 pm, which are an excellent opportunity to try some Israeli beer: Goldstar, Malka, and Maccabee are all popular. There are also a few notable high-end restaurants in Jaffa.

Owned by the Kandinof family in the 20th century, this lean, tunnel-shaped restaurant used to be a street. A cement wall was erected to close off one end and the former shops have been transformed into a bar, exhibition space and private venue. Bent iron rods fan over the tables with fairy lights weaved through and, in the summer, the ceiling can be removed to see the stars whilst local DJs play.

Beit Kandinof is known for its restaurant, but the Beit Kandinof’s center for contemporary art includes five galleries displaying changing exhibitions. The exhibits change every four months, highlighting well-known as well as upcoming artists. This complex is the first of its kind in the region to combine an art center with a high-end restaurant.

Beit Kandinof is such an assault on the senses one hardly knows where to begin. Part bar, part chef restaurant, part cooperative, part gallery, part studio, part gig venue, the only thing this place isn’t is stuffy – despite its uber-culturedness and jaw-dropping setting.

Another newcomer, Beit Kandinof (which is right next to Maskit) is a multipurpose space that’s a restaurant, bar, art gallery, and tattoo parlor. It’s basically a one-stop shop…assuming you need eggplant tortellini, a negroni, a painting, and back ink in one fell swoop.
