To have one of the greatest oyster bars on earth a few miles from my house is an awesome privilege. I drive through Kilcolgan on the way to Galway several days a week–and I think about taking the turn-off at Moran’s on the Weir for some oysters every time. At Moran’s, the edulis oysters are always fat, the brown bread is always hot out of the oven and the Guinness is always just a little bit colder and creamier than anywhere else.

There are two dining venues, the main Gaslight Brasserie with a fine bar and counter, excellent lines of mirrored walls with tall windows, glowing chandeliers, flowers on each table and scattered palms. At dinner options include warm duck salad with chard figs and feta cheese (€14.50) ; a seafood chowder with Pernod and coriander cream (€9.50); and a duo of lamb with a mini shepherd’s pie and a corn feet of garlic (€26).

With its picturesque thatched roof, it’s over 250 years old. After a full day of exploring, we were reading to dig into some local grub and have our first pint of Guinness of the trip.

It’s all about the seafood in Galway, and Moran’s is no exception. This thatched slice of paradise has been serving up the best of local seafood since the 1800’s, so suffice to say they know a thing or two about good fish. There are oysters of every description and a host of other seafood, both hot and cold to choose from.

The oysters here come from Galway’s Clarenbridge Oyster Bed, a natural bed at the mouth of the Dunkellin and Clarenbridge Rivers producing healthy native oysters which grow over 4-5 years, before being expertly prepared by the team at Moran’s.

Moran’s The Weir dates back more than 300 years and is now run by the 7th generation William Moran of the Moran family. The picturesque thatched cottage overlooking the Dunkellin River is situated on one of the many inlets of Galway Bay.
