Reviews Summary

Moran's Oyster Cottage is celebrated for its incredibly fresh, high-quality oysters and traditional Irish seafood dishes, complemented by a warm, rustic atmosphere and stunning river views. While many praise the friendly service and delicious chowder, some diners have noted recent price increases and smaller portion sizes, with a few experiencing slow service and a lack of traditional oyster accompaniments.

"They serve the biggest oysters I’ve ever seen. The 7 generations chowder is pretty spectacular. I think it was in the top three dishes I had during our tour. The chips were the crispiest, fluffiest fat cut fries and were so good. They serve, hands down, the best pint of Guinness in Ireland, I’m convinced. The birding is most excellent as well. I think we spotted at least 7 species in a few minutes after dinner. I would cross the Atlantic to have the chowder and pint while gazing at the birds in the river, even if I did nothing else in Ireland."

"Moran’s has a wonderful, casually upscale, cheerful, and comfortable atmosphere. The staff are exceptional, anticipating our wishes, needs and questions, and meeting them with a friendly demeanor. Though the menu provided a smaller selection, the food was delicious. I had the tiger prawn salad, and my husband enjoyed oysters and cod. It was all excellent and ample! Prices are what you might expect for this kind of experience. I absolutely recommend this restaurant for a special lunch or dinner out. Cheers!"

"This is my seventh day in Ireland on this trip and this is the best (eat out) meal so far! Fresh WILD and natural oysters are so sweet that’s out of this world. But it’s not all about the oysters. Must also have the chowder, brown bread and clams (from the special menu). Bread was soft with crunchy crusts and cut in perfect thinness. Clams were cooked in perfection to conserve its natural sweetness and well balanced with white wine and butter sauce. Seafood chowder contained all the goodness from the sea in a just right not too light or too thick creamy broth that is utterly gorgeous. And of course, all the great good must be accompanied by a pint of Guinness or a local G&T for good measures. For Gin, Gunpowder was my choice of the day. Good atmosphere, great music, booking is recommended even in the so called “quieter period” today. All in all, a good crack! Highly recommended."

To have one of the greatest oyster bars on earth a few miles from my house is an awesome privilege. I drive through Kilcolgan on the way to Galway several days a week–and I think about taking the turn-off at Moran’s on the Weir for some oysters every time. At Moran’s, the edulis oysters are always fat, the brown bread is always hot out of the oven and the Guinness is always just a little bit colder and creamier than anywhere else.
