The Butcher Grill

Housed in a converted butchers’ shop, The Butcher Grill does beef better than anyone else in Ranelagh, possibly better than any other restaurant in the whole of Dublin. This place is a meat-lover’s paradise: they even host a Beef World Cup event on the first Wednesday of every month, where cuts from different countries are cooked on their wood-fired grill, tasted and voted upon.

I’ve written recently about the flight to the suburbs by chefs seeking their own space and Ranelagh was arguably where it all began — John Farrell of Luna has two restaurants here (Butcher Grill and Dillingers), there are cool coffee shops and brunch spots (TriBeCa, Cinnamon), there is the excellent Kinara Kitchen, Pinochio if you want Italian, La Bodega if you want Spanish, La Réserve if you want French, Michie Sushi if you want Japanese, there’s a Diep, an Itsa, a Marios, a Milano, and there is even a good Swiss restaurant called Edelwise that serves chicken cordon-bleu and a choice of fondue (I’m not making this up!).

Forget brunching in Ranelagh — try if you can to get a spot in this compact neighbourhood steak spot, where they serve their weekend roast menu Saturdays and Sundays from 12 to 4 pm. Fish-focused starters include oysters, tuna tostadas and prawns then move on to the main event. For your roast choose from beef with horseradish, leg of lamb with jus or roast chicken, all served with Yorkshire pudding, duck fat roast potatoes, gravy, stuffing, peas and carrots.

From the same stable as Dillinger’s and 777, The Butcher Grill in Ranelagh does exactly what it says on the tin, with Tom Doorley describing a recent meal there as “marvellous” in his Irish Daily Mail review at the weekend. Sunday lunch at €19 per person is great value, but it does include the unusual addition of smoky beans. The wine list is pretty decent, which is good because you’ll need something to wash down that €90 24oz Chateaubriand for two.

With Dillinger’s for top notch American style dining, Michie Sushi for the only show in town sushi-wise, Kinara Kitchen for the best casual Indian and Pakistani cooking you’ll find, The Butcher Grill for meat feasts, La Bodega for authentic tapas, Redmond’s for wine and beer, and Pinocchio for Italian wine and grazing at its most laid-back – can’t help feeling a little bitter about this Dublin 6 food haven becoming more haven-ey.

From the people who brought us the much-beloved 777, Dillinger’s, and Amy Austin, this spot on Ranelagh’s Main Street has reached nothing short of cult status at this stage. As the name suggests, The Butcher Grill is a grill restaurant specialising in great big slabs of meat designed for sharing. While the steaks are not cheap here, you do get one side for a single steak serving or two with the to-share serving.

Meat lovers can have a restaurant-quality steak night thanks to Butcher Grill and their three options are surprisingly affordable. You can choose between Cote de Boeuf (€40), striploin (€45) and Chateaubriand (€50) with each option coming with a choice of two sides. The sides available are broccoli and hazelnut dressing, mashed potatoes, smoky beans and bacon, or cheesy cauliflower.

Every month, the reliable restaurant platform releases the top 10 results as chosen and reviewed by diners. Earning five stars this month was D’Olier Street Restaurant, The Butcher Grill, Bar 1661, Yoi Izakaya, Grano and the new Host Restaurant; nipping at their heels were Mishi Sushi Restaurant, Simply South Restaurant, Zakura Restaurant and Richmond with 4.8 stars apiece.

Perched elegantly on top of The Dean Dublin, there’s no fuss or formality at modern glasshouse restaurant Sophie’s, just a brilliantly friendly experience. With brunch favourites like Huevous Rancheros and French Toast with Maple Syrup to pizza and burgers. Brunch at Sophie’s is served from 11am – 3pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.

The Butcher Grill is an exceptional restaurant located in the quaint town of Ranelagh, Dublin. Offering a wide variety of delicious grilled meats and seafood, their menu suits all taste buds. The Butcher Grill in Ranelagh definitely serves up some of the best steaks in Dublin. There is a huge range of steak on offer, as well as dishes to suit those avoiding meat, we love how many cuts and styles of meat are on offer here. If you're looking to splurge, the côte de boeuf, chateaubriand and tomahawk steaks are fantastic options.

If you fancy yourself a wannabe chef, opt for their cook-it-at-home boxes. The restaurant does all of the prep for you, but it’s your job to cook the steak at home. Choose between two different cuts of meat, sides, starters, desserts (or an Irish cheese selection, yum!), wine, beer, cocktails, or a Champagne gift set.

This intimate, candlelit restaurant is an outstanding steakhouse on main street in Ranelagh. It’s grill menu gets rave reviews, especially the rib eye steak and insanely large tomahawk steak, all cooked to perfection. The bar also serves some classy cocktails including aperol spritz and espresso martinis.

With each steak expertly cooked to preserve its succulence and tenderness, Butcher Grill has undoubtedly become one of Dublin’s favourite steakhouses. The cozy ambiance is reminiscent of a French bistro, with their unmatched attention to detail and commitment to quality shining through in every bite.

Dillinger's is owned by John Farrell, a restaurateur who has been behind some of Dublin’s most popular restaurants including The Butcher Grill, 777 and Super Miss Sue. In 2009, Dillinger’s was the first restaurant he opened, on the site of what had been Dylan McGrath’s Michelin-starred Mint.

Be warned, this place seems to double up as a creche in the first half of the day. However, once the toddler-fuelled madness dies down, Cinnamon then becomes a gorgeous spot to while away an afternoon with a coffee and cake, or a charcuterie platter and glass of wine later in the evening.

There are three options available: Chateaubriand (EUR50), Chateaubriand (30 EUR40), and striploin (EUR45). Each option comes with two sides. Sides include mashed potatoes with hazelnut dressing, broccoli and hazelnut dressing, and smoky beans with bacon or cheesy cauliflower.

I’m no stranger to this restaurant group having tried brunch in Dillinger’s (which was great) and numerous visits to 777 which is one of my favourite dining spots in Dublin. These guys just seem to have the casual dining thing down to a T.
