Back down in leafy Portobello, Locks offers a charming canalside location twinned with some of city’s best food. Finished in a stylish blue exterior alongside quaint canopies for a particularly pleasant outdoor setting, this place has changed hands a lot over the years but it looks like they’ve found their groove as a lunch spot and a great evening meal restaurant. One reason for that might be their unique menus where they offer the sort of food you won’t find at your average run-of-the-mill bistro.

The weekly-changing menu tempts taste buds to tingle each time it’s released on Twitter, Locks on Windsor Terrace has all bases covered with their meal kits for two. Enjoy the likes of a braised lamb shank shepherd's pie (€62) or a salt-aged Delmonico ribeye (€68), each with four accompanying courses. A hot takeaway option for one is often available too, like tempura salt and vinegar fish and chips, if plating up rather than reheating is more your forté.

I had the lamb because I couldn't help myself and it reminds me of home. The meals can be quite heavy so I would recomende here if you are planning a big night after.

Ask most people (girls especially) and they’d say that chocolate would have to top the list, and when it comes to a dessert that is decadent, rich and tastes amazing it would have to be the fondant. In this city hands down the best one you will get is at the wonderful Locks. Best tenner you’ll ever spend.

Their price point is fairly accessible, and they have a beautiful dining room right on the canal in Portobello. I went there recently for Sunday lunch and had a wonderful time. We had the sugar cured ribs and which were incredible – the meat was just dripping off the bone.

Locks is a neighborhood favorite and one that visitors might not be acquainted with. Historically, the building used to be a sweet shop. However, during the Irish rebellion, it was used as a vantage point to spy on the British soldiers’ barracks across the road.

The cosy neighbourhood atmosphere and ideal canal location make it an excellent choice for a romantic evening. You can’t go wrong with any of their local fish plates and don’t leave without trying a dessert.
