Amazing Korean food may not be something you’d expect to find in a traditional Irish pub, yet Kimchi Hophouse is not only Ireland’s oldest Korean restaurant but also arguably the best. Opened in 2005, this pub serves up a lunch menu featuring classic dishes like bulgogi, kimchi stew and spicy chilli pork for just €10 (£8.94), and the staff is happy to explain which dishes can accommodate vegetarians. For dinner, the Korean Tapas menu is brimming with reasonably priced delights such as pumpkin croquettes and deep-fried octopus.

A unique Korean-Japanese standout in the slew of cheap and cheerful Chinese eateries on Parnell Street (the closest Dublin comes to a Chinatown), Hop House is a restaurant and pub in one. Part of the old Shakespeare pub has been transformed into one of the friendliest, best-value restaurants in the city. The dining room is bright and busy, with little table buzzers for service and the sounds of music spilling over from the bar next door.

Dublin’s so-called Chinatown is really a mix of Chinese and Korean restaurants, bars and cafes that sprung up on the north side’s tumbledown Parnell Street East in the boom years of the 1990s and early 2000s. More recently, Vietnamese restaurants have joined them. Many of these eateries occupy buildings that were once pubs, and Hophouse, considered one of the best in the city, is a fun mix of Korean restaurant and Irish bar.

Indeed, the Kimchi Hophouse is resolutely two things at the same time – a slightly scruffy, traditional Irish pub, and a thriving Korean restaurant, in one slightly-creaky building. The former Shakespeare Pub still bears its previous branding, with the small addition of a small rectangular sign with the current name just under the gilt Victorian (Edwardian?) one. Parnell Street is sometimes called Dublin’s Chinatown, in that there is a pretty decent concentration of restaurants and supermarkets representing many different Asian cultures and cuisines, and you could do little better than listen to the excellent Three Castles Burning episode on the street and its history, which also highlights its many African and other influences – there’s a lot going on here.

With delicious, authentic Korean food, great options for vegetarians and vegans and brilliant service, I have nothing negative to say about this place. We went with our friends and between the four of us, we ordered (and loved) everything; Hansik Jeyuk (pork marinated in Korean chilli sauce), Bibimbap with tofu & mushroom – my personal fave, U-dong prawn tempura noodle soup and Tempura vegetable donburi. We even ordered a glass of So Mac (a mix of Soju – traditional Korean rice wine and beer) to try for the first time, which was interesting.

Dublin's oldest Korean restaurant, Kimchi Hophouse is an institution at this stage. Half set in an Irish pub slash dinky Korean restaurant, start with their anju bites (or tapas as they call them), which is a Korean term that basically means snacks to drink alcohol with. Famous for their Bibimbap and Zigae (Korean stew), one of these puppies with a pint of Guinness will set you straight.

When you need a place for a spontaneous meet-up with friends who are randomly in town or a third date with someone you met on an app, then Kimchi Hophouse is your only man. No matter which of its three names you call it by, this is a proper knight of the Dublin bar scene. Home to some of the first Korean food in the city, this gastropub has been slinging good craic for a generation.

With fresh ingredients and amazing staff, you know that you're in for a delicious meal if you visit this Parnell Street restaurant. Kimchi Hophouse definitely offers some of the tastiest sushi in Dublin, so if you haven't visited yet, then you need to go ASAP.

Kimchi Hophouse is just one of the fantastic cheap restaurants on Dublin's Parnell Street. Combining the traditions of Korea with that of an Irish pub, cheap eats is what you can expect here. The Spicebag would probably feed two people as it comes with chips, wings, chicken mandu and spring rolls for just €9.

Korean – Japanese restaurant & pub combo was my favourite Asian eatery when I discovered my passion for Asian cuisine. There was a time when I was eating out there at least once a week, no kidding. The atmosphere is inviting and friendly and the food delectable with an agreeably biting spicy flavour.

Another awesome Dublin international restaurant that is a must-try is Kimchi Hophouse. Some restaurants are known for their amazing dishes, and some are known for their incredible value. The Kimchi Hophouse manages to tick both boxes.

This cosy pub-slash-Korean restaurant on Parnell Street is a gem. Bibimbap, bulgogi, and kimchi stew are all under €12, and portions are generous. A brilliant choice for warming up on a cold Dublin day.
