From day one, we realised that the alcohol restrictions here were rather different to New South Wales. During our time here we also learnt that if you had an opened bottle of wine at a hotel restaurant, you were allowed to take the unfinished bottle with you to your hotel room; only if it’s within the same hotel. For example, on our last night at Yulara we asked if it would be possible to take wine left from dinner at the Ilkari restaurant at Sails in the Desert – back to Desert Gardens Hotel.

There were a lot of options and at the time I was there the beans, mushrooms and hash browns were all vegan. Then toasts, fruit, nuts, cereals, and a few options of plant-based milks. I certainly got my moneys worth and was dangerously close to needing to purchase a second seat for the flight on the way home.

So instead of showing you my breakfast plate from each morning, I sneaked into the restaurant just before it opened and got pictures of everything before anyone dug in!. There was also a chef preparing omelettes, French toast, and more on the griddle.

Back at the resort, visit in-house restaurant Ilkari, which features Indigenous flavours and offers an extravagant three-course buffet that includes seafood, Asian dishes, roasts, a selection of cheeses and, perhaps best of all, a chocolate fountain.

Most everything was well labeled and if not the chefs were so helpful. Salads, curries, patatas bravas, roasted veg, and numerous desserts to name a few of our favorites. It was great to have a buffet worth it for gf/vegans and non alike!

The Sails in the Desert resort has a nightly buffet for $65.00 per person at the Ilkari Restaurant while the adjoining Maju A La Carte offers an innovative and interesting menu. Get your burgers and fish and chips at the Pira Pool Bar.
