What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Stand25 Bistro receives high praise for its innovative take on Hungarian classics, with many highlighting the exceptional quality of dishes like the steak and goulash soup. The atmosphere is described as pleasant and relaxed, offering a fine-dining experience at reasonable prices. However, some diners have noted that the service can be slow and inattentive, and a few found the food quality did not always match the premium pricing.
"I usually prefer the sister restaurants of Michelin spots because they offer better value, less pomp, and the food is still exceptional, and stand25 bistro did not disappoint.
After wandering a packed Fisherman's Bastion, a friend and I made our way down the steps to bistro25, located in a relatively quiet corner of the buda side of city. At 730p, with the exception of the occasional motorcycle blasting by, it was quiet and a nice relief from the crowds.
bistro25 offers a seasonal menu, so I wasn't able to try the layered potatoes, but we both got the 3 course menu, so there was goulash (so good), some of the best duck leg I've ever had, and incredible steak with duck liver pate, and two desserts to be had - all under $90/each (tax and tip included) with a cocktail.
Don't sleep on this spot, but make a reservation."

"Amazing food and great service. We had goulash soup to start with followed by meatloaf with potato and cucumber pure and also baked potatoes with sausage. Both so yummyyyyy. Home made lemonades were really good too. I even got a small stool for my bag 🤩 I will definitely be back here!"

"A fantastic place with an open kitchen, impressively, there’s no smell at all. The service was professional and attentive from start to finish. The food was excellent; we were welcomed with a delicious starter of fresh bread, butter, and pâté. The steak was perfectly cooked and full of flavor. Even when my colleagues weren’t happy with their beer, the waiter replaced it immediately without any fuss. Highly recommended!"

At a Time of Transition, Budapest Is as Vital and Elegant as Ever
Owned by chefs Szabina Szulló and Tamás Széll, Stand25 is the slightly more casual Buda sister restaurant to the Michelin-starred Stand in Pest. The couple has been instrumental in changing perceptions around Hungarian staples with their smart updates of goulash soup and túrógombóc cottage cheese dumplings with sour cherry. Szaletly is a newer restaurant in a high-ceilinged space up near City Park (itself worth a visit for the Museum of Ethnography and the spaceship-like House of Hungarian Music, by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto).

Stand25 is the low-key alternative to its sister restaurant, Stand. Located in District I, it’s a friendly bistro run by Michelin-star chefs Szabina Szulló and Tamás Széll. The menu here changes all the time, but Mautner recommends trying the goulash and potato casserole.

8 Delicious Goulash in Budapest
When in 2017 Szabina Szulló and Tamás Széll, the latter a European Bocuse d'Or winner and celebrity-chef in Hungary, announced they were leaving their Michelin-starred restaurant to venture out on their own, one didn’t need a business degree to predict success. The concept of Stand25 was to prove that traditional Hungarian fare can be more than the gut-busting, high-carb, greasy affair this country got used to during the Communist period (1948-1989) and well past that. Indeed, the restaurant's success was immediate: a well-off local crowd fills Stand25's tables every day for lunch and dinner.

The bistro of prominent Magyar chefs Tamás Széll and Szabina Szulló, located within the Downtown Market, was highly anticipated in Budapest – especially by those who saw how well Tamás Széll and his team did at last year’s Bocuse d’Or. They finally opened their eatery in February, offering excellent courses of high-end gastronomy for affordable prices. The bistro has been truly popular ever since the opening, and we also popped in to take a sneak peek into the everyday life of this tiny but highly professional eatery.
The best restaurants in Budapest | EasyJet
After success at Michelin-starred fine-diner Onyx, creative duo Tamás Széll and Szabina Szulló set up on their own to do something oddly groundbreaking: calorific, comforting Hungarian classics done really well for not much money. The busy tables at this Buda-side bistro close to the Chain Bridge attest to the gap they’ve filled in this part of town. Pretty much everything is satisfying at Stand25, but if you only do one gulyás (goulash) while you're in Budapest, do it here.
