📍 New York Café, Budapest — often called the most beautiful café in the world ✨ We went around 3 PM for afternoon tea — no reservations at that time, so expect a short wait (about 20–40 minutes) before getting a table. Reviews Summary

New York Café is overwhelmingly praised for its absolutely stunning, opulent Neo-Baroque interior and historic atmosphere, often described as the 'most beautiful cafe in the world.' Visitors enjoy the live piano music and the unique experience of dining in such a grand setting. However, many reviews caution that it is a tourist trap with significantly overpriced food and drinks, and inconsistent service. While the setting is the main draw, the culinary offerings and value for money are frequently cited as disappointing.

"Absolutely stunning! Wow. We arrived early as recommended, so we hardly had to wait (after 8:30am the line gets very long and you can’t reserve in advance for mornings). There was a pianist playing lovely music, and the atmosphere was simply breathtaking. The food was quite nice, with delicious pastries. The staff were polite, though not exceptionally attentive. Still, overall it was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend it!"

Ann Cohen

"We only visited the restaurant. It is a beautiful cafe. The history is that it was the New York Insurance company building and they basically went all out on the construction. Totally stunning interior. We waited maximum 5 minutes but it was a bit later. We came for just dessert and coffee. I think they could offer better dessert options. They really didn't have a cake, which is what we wanted. The "cake" is a 1cm sponge with a bunch of mouse on top. It wasn't cake but it tasted okay. The price is high for most items. You are definitely paying to look at the interior of the building and take photos, which is what most people were doing - walking around taking photos and being in the servers way. Go one time and that's enough"

Adra Anderson

"I arrived at about 8:45am on a Tuesday. The very nice hostess told me if I waited for a short time, she’ll give me the first table to come available. I waited 10 minutes she got me a great table right at the window. It was just myself. I had just a cappuccino (I already ate breakfast) and sat to enjoy the live piano music.

I liked it and the prices were very reasonable. Judging from the menu, I would say this draws it back from a very high level of opulence that it could have. The cuisine caters to tourists on a budget, versus a higher end experience (from what I could tell). This makes it more accessible for sure. The service was very good (especially the hostess), the ambience was perfect. It’s worth a visit."

Top Budapest Cafés | Historic And Modern Coffee Guide 2025

The most elegant of coffeehouses from the city’s fin-de-si è cle heyday, the New York Café bills itself as ‘The Most Beautiful Café in the World’ – hence the crystal chandeliers, 24-carat-gold latte macchiato and slow-moving queue to get in every morning. Why we love it: For its gilded history – Mihály Kertész, later Michael Curtiz of Casablanca fame, was a regular, while playwright Ferenc Molnár threatened to throw the key into the Danube so that the place would never close. Time Out tip: The New York’s relatively affordable all-day breakfasts allow you to linger longer over eggs Benedict.

You don't need to visit every café in the world to decide that New York Café, often referred to as "the most beautiful café in the world," definitely deserves its title, or at least ranks very high on that list. Located within the luxe Anantara New York Palace Budapest Hotel and built in Italian Renaissance-style, the interiors feature marble columns, stuccoed angels, and sparkling chandeliers dangling from high ceilings adorned by spectacular frescoes. It's one of the oldest cafés in Budapest, dating back 125 years, and was once a meeting place for struggling artists.

A step back in time: Budapest's best coffee houses

The moment you stroll through the heavy glass doors flanked with torch-bearing gargoyles, it’s easy to see why New York Café ranks high on the list of the world’s most beautiful coffeehouses. With enough gold leaf, milk-white marble and red velvet to keep a Habsburg happy, this spectacular cafe doesn’t skimp on opulence. The prices may mirror its grand surroundings, but you’re not just having a coffee here – you’re languishing in a palace that was once a melting pot of artists and nobility.

The 24 best Budapest restaurants

New York Café claims to be the world’s most beautiful café – and it’s difficult to mount a counter-argument. During the 19th century, it was the regular haunt of some of Hungary's leading artists and poets, but they must have struggled to concentrate when surrounded by such opulence. There are ceiling frescoes, sculpted cherubs, railings upholstered with red velvet, gilded columns and other fancy trappings that attract as many selfie-takers as coffee drinkers.

While it is possible to have more than just dessert at New York Cafe – which is attached to the Boscolo Hotel – the truth is, it’s a little pricey. One of the reasons the cafe is such a popular location for tourists is because of its impressive, ornate interior.

Historic cafés of Budapest

The Neo-Baroque New York Café was opened in 1894 and quickly became a place frequented by Hungarian writers and poets. Partly destroyed during the second world war and then ‘nationalized’ by the communist regime, the coffee house has been restored to its original nobility thanks to the new Italian owner, Boscolo Group which reopened it in 2006. Considered by some media as the most beautiful café in the world, you will discover the bronze Lucifers outside evoking the many artists and intellectuals who frequented the Café and on the inside the ceiling frescoes of the nineteenth century Hungarian painters, Gusztáv Mannheimer and Ferenc Eisenhut, that rival the beauty of the extraordinary marble floors, gilding and frescoes.

The New York Cafe in Budapest is said to be one of the most beautiful cafes in the world and it’s the perfect spot for breakfast or a coffee in a rather gorgeous setting. Their signature move is adding gold leaf to every hot drink so this may be the only time you can try a cappuccino with gold leaf instead of chocolate powder on top 😉 The glitzy interior means it’s become popular on social media of late so whilst it’s a great photo opp there are plenty of other people here for the shot. Try and come for opening time for the lowest chance of having to queue but you might get unlucky (like me!) and find that the best location to take a photo of New York cafe has been booked for a private breakfast 👀

New York Café in Budapest complete review: Is it worth it? (2025)

Before we get into my review, I just wanted to touch on why New York Café is one of Budapest’s top attractions and called the world’s most beautiful café. Firstly, New York Café is celebrated for its breathtaking architectural splendor, with an interior that boasts ornate ceilings, gilded stucco, grand chandeliers, and luxurious furnishings, all housed within the Italian Renaissance-style New York Palace built in the late 19th century, during the gilded age. Secondly, since its opening in 1894, the New York Café served as a meeting place for the city’s intellectuals, writers, and poets throughout the 20th century.

Being voted the most beautiful coffee house in the world, New York Café is nothing short of glamorous, famous and historic - and also has many legendary stories. The former headquarters of the New York Life Insurance Company was designed by Alajos Hauszmann, who also designed the Buda Castle, so it's no wonder that its radiant grandeur almost illuminates the boulevard. The protagonist of so many poems, short stories, and chansons, the palace still embodies all the dreams, fantasies, and nostalgia we cherish about the Belle Époque and the vibrant intellectual life between the two world wars.

The New York Café on the Grand Boulevard is not only the most beautiful in Budapest but in the whole world. With curved marble pillars, frescoed ceilings bordered by stuccoed cherubs, and lavish gold-leaf gilding, this café dating back to the fin de siècle, was once a hub for Hungarian artists, writers, and journalists who spent many delirious nights here in a haze of cigarette smoke and alcohol. Today there is usually a long line to get in, and a cup of coffee can set you back €10, but it’s worth it to soak in the atmosphere and beauty of this historic landmark.
