Reviews Summary

Gettó Gulyás is celebrated for its authentic and delicious Hungarian cuisine, particularly its hearty stews and unique offerings, all served in a cozy and vibrant atmosphere. While many praise the exceptional food quality and attentive service, a few diners have noted occasional slow service and long waits during peak times.

"This place was incredible and the highlight of our visit. I recommend booking in advance.
From the moment we arrived the staff were so wonderful. It’s a great space - modern clean decor with a touch of quirky old world charm.
Seating is available outside on the sidewalk but we definitely preferred the interior seating and atmosphere.
The menu was amazing with so many traditional dishes to choose from. Every single dish was not only beautifully presented but tasted superb. If you’re overwhelmed then just ask the staff to recommend a few things- you can’t go wrong.
Local Hungarian wines are such great value and absolutely sensational - highly recommend trying one. Dessert was a perfect sweet finish.
Wow, what a place! I can’t recommend this place more highly. Absolute must try."

"I went to this restaurant on the recommendation of a friend who lives in Budapest, and I’m so glad I did. He advised me to make a reservation since the place is very popular, and that turned out to be excellent advice—the restaurant was busy, but welcoming.

I started with something unusual: cucumbers with sour cream. It may sound simple, but it was absolutely delicious, especially paired with the fresh bread that came alongside. For my next course, I had a pancake filled with tender veal pieces and vegetables in a flavorful sauce—astounding in both taste and presentation. I paired it with a glass of their Cabernet, which was rich and smooth.

For my main course, I had veal with buttered noodles. The noodles were uniquely wrapped in a circle of bacon, adding both flavor and creativity to the dish. Everything was cooked to perfection.

The atmosphere is warm and cozy—lively and a bit loud, but still comfortable for conversation. The service was outstanding, and the interior design had so much detail that added to the charm and coziness of the space.

I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Budapest. It’s a memorable dining experience, and I’m already hoping to return before I leave."

Threads And Magic

"Quirky, modern place to have a lunch or dinner. We have booked a table and we had a feeling that it is recommended as place was full on the lunch time. Loved decor, staff was very attentive and polite. Amazing traditional food. I had pancake with a mushroom filling for a starter. 10 out of 10. Goulash soup for a main. 9 out of 10, only because it felt too salty for my liking. But to be honest I am using not a lot of salt when cooking myself, so in most of places food feels a bit too salty for me. Soup was tasty anyway. Cottage cheese balls in a sour cream sauce for a desert. 10 out of 10. And homemade lemonade for a drink 10 out of 10. Definitely recommend when visiting Budapest. Did not take any pictures of interior as place was full with people and didn't feel it is nice to take pictures of others while they are enjoying their amazing food."

A tourist-friendly restaurant near the Great Synagogue in the heart of the Jewish Quarter, Gettó Gulyás gets its name from the history of its location and the iconic Hungarian dish so many visitors seek – although other Magyar classics appear on its concise menu. Why we love it Deep in tourist central, Gettó Gulyás could charge far more than they do – you’re paying regular prices for Hungarian favourites near the main sights of downtown Budapest. Time Out tip: You certainly should reserve – and when you do, ask for a table on the pavement terrace.

5 must-try goulash soups served in Budapest - English

It would indeed be quite funny if the Jewish Quarter’s stew place, Gettó Gulyás, would not offer goulash soup (in Hungarian goulash translates to “gulyás”). Gettó Gulyás opened in the beginning of 2016, and they strictly offer traditional Hungarian courses, without any “rethinking”, reinventing, or too many twists. Their Hungarian lunch specials are truly popular in the neighborhood, and they offer Budapest’s best túrógombóc (Hungarian sweet cottage-cheese dumplings).

Goulash is Hungary’s most well-known national dish, but traditional Hungarian Goulash is quite different from the variations you’ll find outside the country – it’s more of a soup than a stew. Primarily made with tender chunks of beef, vegetables, and plenty of paprika, with some versions including csipetke (hand-rolled pinched noodles). 7 Hungarian Dishes to Eat in Budapest

Hungary's national dish tends to be served as a stew in most parts of the world, but an authentic gulyás is actually a thin broth made from chunks of beef cooked with onions, paprika, tomatoes, and pepper. It's usually served with white bread and chopped hot paprika on the side. It's traditionally a peasant dish and was originally cooked by herdsmen in cast iron bogrács (cauldrons) over open fires.
