Reviews Summary
Deryne offers a captivating atmosphere and delicious Hungarian-French cuisine, with standout dishes like schnitzel and duck leg. Diners praise the attentive service and unique ambiance, though some note that the prices can be on the higher side for the quality offered, particularly for certain steak dishes. The historic bakery and live music contribute to its charm.
"This restaurant was highly recommended by several locals and very glad we were able to go. Beautiful indoor and outdoor seating. Can’t go wrong either way. Food was very fresh and delicious. The asparagus dish is a must. All of the staff were incredible. We felt more like we were being served by friends. Definitely recommend!"

"I really wanted to give this restaurant a 5 — and trust me, I’m holding on to that last star so tightly! This spot was recommended by a friend, and from the moment we arrived, we knew we were in for a great evening. The waiter greeted us warmly and reassured us they’d find us a table, which they did without any hassle.
The atmosphere was absolutely spectacular — beautiful, elegant, and with a sexy charm. A DJ was playing in the background, adding to the vibe without being intrusive. The restaurant features both indoor and outdoor seating, each space beautifully designed with dim romantic lighting, warm wood accents, and plants woven into the decor. We chose to sit outside and it was perfect.
We turned to Google Maps for food suggestions and ended up ordering the eggplant schnitzel as a starter and the veal escalope for our main. The portions were generous, the presentation was excellent, and the quality of the food truly stood out. Everything was full of flavor and thoughtfully prepared.
To top it off, they welcomed us with complimentary bread, olive oil, and thyme — and ended the meal with delicious Hungarian bubbles on the house. It’s those extra touches that really make a difference.
A special shoutout to Martin, our waiter, who was incredibly helpful and added so much warmth to our experience.
We highly recommend this place — it’s absolutely worth the visit!"

"The place is charming, large, with a variety of indoor and outdoor seating options for all tastes. It's luxurious, so don't do as I did and come well dressed. The food is delicious with good, fresh ingredients and freshly prepared. The service is very friendly and very professional. The price is in line with the quality of the place; you should come with a full wallet."

The 24 best Budapest restaurants
Déryné, located beyond the western side of Buda's Castle Hill, offers a bustling, atmospheric blend of influences. It opened as a patisserie in 1914, and the yesteryear café feel remains strong (indeed, Déryné still has its own bakery), with its big clock, plush drapes and spreading ferns. But in the 1950s it was a popular night spot too, and this musical tradition remains a feature, with regular live gypsy players and jazz played through the speakers.

Located near Krisztina Square, the bistro has a bakery with a small wooden booth on the street from which you can purchase pastries to go.

Okay, time to pull yourself out of your thermal bath-induced haze (there’s actually a word for this in Russian because it’s totally a thing!), and either take a short walk or even shorter tram ride to one of my favourite restaurants in the whole of Budapest for dinner. Déryné was where I had my first dinner in Budapest, and it became the standard for all others. The cuisine is French-influenced Hungarian and, while it’s definitely not the cheapest meal you’ll have in Budapest, the whole experience is well worth it.

As one of the oldest restaurants in the Buda districts, found at the foot of the wonderful Castle Hill, Deryne no doubt offers a host of traditional Hungarian cuisine, including a schnitzel as big as your face. This is one of my all-time favourite spots; they sometimes host piano players and have an incredible wine selection, so you can grab a glass and just lose yourself in the history of this 18th-century soup kitchen-turned-bistro restaurant. TIP: Shnitzel, schnitzel, schnitzel!
