Every first and second of November he withdraws the fiambre recipe that has delighted the taste buds of the most demanding fiambre connoisseur for over 27 years. From his unassuming Lo-Mix comedor set on 7a calle poniente No. 25B, he begins, like an artist, to paint the canvas with different shades of green lettuce, adding more colors, textures and flavors with each layer from a tasteful palette of over 40 ingredients.

La Fonda de la Calle Real serves up traditional home cooking in a colonial setting, offering a variety of specialities from regions across Guatemala. Order the plato típico, a medley of local delicacies, including chile relleno – roasted stuffed bell peppers – plantain, refried beans, farmer’s cheese and pupusa.

This is a good place to get traditional Guatemalan food, such as pepian, though there's also plenty of international-style food here as well. This restaurant has been so popular that they've opened three branches, all within a few blocks of each other. My favorite branch atmosphere-wise is the one on 3a Calle.

If you’re looking for typical Guatemalan food in an upscale setting, you might want to consider La Fonda de la Calle Real. They’ve expanded into three restaurants over the years. Still, the one we ate at on Avenida Norte is a former colonial home with a rich history, beautiful architecture, and decor.

The Last restaurant we tried in Antigua is called the Fonda de la Calle Real. This place was really nicely decorated and was more on the finer dining side. The prices were a bit more than other restaurants we went to but it was still nice.

Other sources recommend H Bistro/Hector’s Bistro at 1 Calle Poniente No. 9A and Tartines at 4a Calle Oriente, No. 1C. A good friend was recently there and loved Hector’s mentioned above and Epicure at 3a Ave.

La Fonda de La Calle Real has preserved the menu for years, and they have done it right!. Locals will tell you they’ve visited at least once, and most recommend the queso fundido (fondue).
