Open since 1976, you’d swear Niko’s swallows up more and more space every year, with tables overflowing from the wide street outside the restaurant up onto Agia Moni, the small square above. And necessarily so, as it’s always absolutely packed, with couples, groups of friends, and families, all having the time of their lives as the long-standing waiting staff move balletically around them. Inside, bottles of wine grace shelves alongside model boats as decoration, but most people want to be outdoors, sitting on the small, white-painted wooden chairs at tables decked out in red and white checked tablecloths.

Found just around the corner from Pepper, nearer to the port, Niko’s Taverna is a great spot to soak up the sun while enjoying quality food. It’s one of the bigger establishments in the area and operates a walk in only policy, meaning you’ll have a good chance of getting a table. This traditional taverna has been open since 1976 and slowly gotten bigger and bigger, with tables spilling out from the large street right up to the square – a testament to this restaurant’s popularity.

Niko’s Taverna – a short walk from the windmills is the traditional Greek restaurant called Nikos with what seems like hundreds of tables with red gingham tablecloths. There are a few vegan options to choose from here and I had the lentil soup which was so delicious. Service is so slick here and it has a nice fun atmosphere.

You will find here plenty of traditional greek tavernas, like Niko’s Taverna, most of which have English written menus too. Places like Gregory’s serve up Italian cuisine if you want a change. The Veranda restaurant is a restaurant for casual diners or you can visit another italian such asIl Parmigiano for Romantic dining.

With both outdoor and indoor areas, it is a large touristy restaurant located right on the waterfront. You will notice the beautiful nautical décor, as well as a seasonal menu that focuses on seafood and freshly caught fish.

The bustling little square in front of Niko’s Taverna is vibrant and alive during the evenings. Glowing lights warm up the white buildings and create an exuberant atmosphere. During the day it’s calm and quiet but has great features like the church below and doors covered with colourful bougainvillea plants.

The key to serving up excellent seafood is to make sure that it's fresh. Sure, a gourmet chef can make anything taste exquisite, but if the fish isn't fresh, the taste won't just be the same. It'll probably just be fine, but not one to make a fuss over.

Late: Back in Chora, grab a table at the bound-to-be-busy Niko’s Taverna (Porta; 00 30 22890 24320), a Mykonos institution known for its fresh fish (you’ll spot the fresh catch of the day, including sea urchins, on ice around the entrance).

This Mykonos Town taverna is a family-run affair that has been operating since the 1970s. Visit this low-key eatery for freshly cooked Greek favourites and a convivial atmosphere. Taverna Nikos is open daily from 11:30 to 01:30.

Our first night in Mykonos, taking the recommendation of a friend, we decided to try Nikos Taverna. The restaurant has tons of adorable outdoor seating. They serve traditional Greek food as well as many pasta and salad options.

The first is Niko’s Taverna, where I had the most amazing lobster pasta (not kidding – half an entire lobster was in there). We sat outside on their terrace enjoying the city and sun while eating this wonderfully fresh meal.

Besides the beautiful streets and the cute shops there are also some churches. At Niko’s Taverna Square there is a cute church with a red roof which is very picturesque. It’s also a great place to grab lunch.

The place was so busy and crowded it lost the whole atmosphere of sitting in a local taverna. The food was cold within two minutes of being delivered and it was less than average.

Whilst there I enjoyed a lovely bunless beef burger – probably the best I have ever tasted – and chocolate mousse for dessert at Nikos Taverna. The quality of food was wonderful.

Seafood is by the kilo and the dishes of the day are always quite delicious (the dish of the day when we visited it was baked fish with tomatoes and spinach).
