Like many of the buildings in Kos Town, Platanos has an interesting history. Open for over 40 years as a restaurant and coffee bar, it’s housed in an old Venetian-style building that was the officer’s headquarters during the Italian occupation of WWII. It’s open from breakfast through to dinner, so enjoy your coffee, home-made lemonade and unique meze – try the calamari with hummus and fried tomato croquettes – as you watch Kos life pass by.

Set on the shady square where Hippocrates reputedly once taught in the shade of a vast plane tree, Platanos is a breezy space with an airy inner lounge and outdoor tables. Try the spiced, grilled lamb chops or famous pork and crackling ( ellasonitiko). Live music accompanies meals on some evenings, but Platanos is really at its best for brunch or lunch in summer.

Apoplous (on Psalidhi St., near Market) has live Greek music; Platanos, across from the Hippocrates Tree, has live music, often jazz; and just across from Platanos is the beginning of Bar Street, which needs no further introduction. The lively Fashion Club, Kanari 2 Dolphins Sq., has the most impressive light-and-laser show. On Akti Zouroudi there are two popular discos, Heaven and Calua (with a swimming pool).

Once you catch your breath, wander towards Platanos, the island’s old capital that is as authentically Greek as you can get.
