For a slice of real Chania life as lived by the locals, head up Milonogianni Street from the city centre to savour Evgonia’s excellent traditional dishes like chicken pilafi, lamb with oven potatoes, and horta with lemon and olive oil. There’s always a fish of the day and owner Nektarios is happy to make recommendations, or head to the kitchen to explore. This is fine authentic Cretan cooking and whatsmore, half the price of the harbourside establishments.

Bright-eyed Nektarios Chalakatevakis and his wife Sofia make running the best taverna in town look easy. Order fish and chips, Cretan-style: whole grilled cod, chunky chips fried in olive oil and the crunchy, colourful house salad. Set in a residential neighbourhood, this is where the locals eat for a fraction of what you’d pay on the waterfront.

The restaurant is situated a bit out of the way but is well worth the effort to find. This is a great place for neighborhood dishes with a menu that is not extensive but does feature some classic Greek favorites. The portions are large – if you are dining alone, you definitely do not need a salad, appetizer and a main.

Evgonia restaurant, far from the tourist center of Chania, is a place where the locals themselves eat. Grilled fish, salad with vegetables, pine nuts and pomegranate, and lamb are excellent here. For dessert, you should choose homemade yogurt with jam, and Cretan wine is recommended as a drink.

Four blocks from Chania’s City Hall, away from the hustle and bustle of the water’s edge, you’ll find a tavern where the food is less important than the views. Here, regulars come for food with substance. Evgonia doesn’t have a print menu.
