What Travellers Say

Bougatsa Iordanis is celebrated for its long-standing tradition and uniquely delicious bougatsa, especially the savory myzithra cheese variety. Many praise the flaky pastry and authentic local experience, often paired with traditional Greek coffee. However, some find the experience overhyped and suggest other local bakeries may offer better value or taste, with occasional comments on service timing.
"It’s not just the tradition, here we talk about pure perfection 😁 Never had a bougatsa with cheese and sugar, but I must say it was delicious! The friendly atmosphere, the staff with their smile and jokes made the experience even sweeter and memorable. One of the must visit and taste places in Chania!"

"We went here for breakfast and wow… just wow. 🤩 They serve traditional Bougatsa, and we tried the one with soft goat cheese, absolutely amazing! We ordered three versions: one without sugar, one with sugar, and one with sugar plus cinnamon (they had it on the table), and every single one was incredible. The pastry came out hot and crunchy, and the flavor was out of this world.
What really surprised us is that one of my friends doesn’t usually like sweet and savory together, but this completely changed her mind. 🙌 A must-try, even if you think it’s not your thing. On top of that, the staff was super friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend starting your morning here, you won’t regret it! 🥐✨"

"Wonderful pie. The experience is a bit chaotic, because there can be a big line to sit and take away. But it is worth it. The pie is very very good, especially the traditional one. Also the greek coffee is good."

How To Eat Well in Chania
Iordanis Bougatsa (est 1924) is Chania’s oldest bougatsa store. Here they serve two different types of bougatsa – one is sweet with custard, the other is savoury with myzithra (a local goat & sheep cheese), although they sprinkle some sugar on this too. Back in the early 1920s during the Greco-Turkish war, many Greeks returned to Greece from Turkey.

There are two places (ironically just down the street from one another) to get bougatsa in Chania, and you can’t go wrong with either. Bougatsa is a warm Cretan cheese pie.
