Bougatsa doesn’t originally come from Crete, it is more traditionally associated to Northern Greece. But on Crete (and especially Chania) a Cretan twist was created many years ago with Cretan Mizithra Cheese. 📍 Bougatsa Iordannis in Chania. Have you tasted? 🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷 Ten of my top spots I ate in Chania. 1. Thalassino Ageri - Seafood on the seafront with a dramatic backdrop. 2. Iordanis Bougatsa - The oldest bougatsa store in town. 3. Bougatsa Chania - Another great spot for bougatsa on the same street. 4. Not in the city but still in Chania regional unit. Thirty minutes into the mountains. This roadside restaurant cook everything on open fires. 5. Perp...

CHANIOTIKI BOUGATSA. You know the one I’m referring too, the amazing Bougatsa Iordanis in Chania, Crete. Each time I visit it gets better and better and this year I developed a bit of an addiction. It’s heavenly in every sense of the word. Crunchy and hot, salty and sweet, just YUM. As mentioned in the video, we don’t have Cretan Mizithra in Australia so after a few attempts of rigorous bougatsa c...

Reviews Summary

This spot is celebrated for its authentic Cretan bougatsa, praised for its crispy phyllo and creamy cheese filling. Many highlight its affordability and value, especially when paired with coffee. While most reviews rave about the delicious taste and local charm, a few note that the cheese filling can be overly salty for some palates.

"Bougatsa Chania is an absolute must when visiting the city! Their bougatsa is simply incredible—crispy on the outside, warm and creamy on the inside. My girlfriend and I came here in the morning and loved every bite. A perfect way to start the day, and we’ll definitely be back next time we’re in Chania!"

Ingo Kindling

"Was a must do on my bucket list when visiting Greece and Chania itself, being a local dish, because of the specific cheese they use, no booking required, was very busy so had to sit inside that was OK. A lot of locals and tourists visit this store, no surprise. You can only get 1 dish here apart from drinks , the coffee is strong and the Bougatsa (tradional with cheese) the star of the show was excellent. The taste works well with a good sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar.
Great authentic Cretan taste 👌"

Mark Carlton

"A truly authentic place to try bougatsa. They still weigh it the traditional way with a balance scale and weights, which adds to the charm. The taste is different from other places we’ve tried — I suspect this is the more authentic version. It’s not sweet by default; you add sugar and cinnamon yourself to taste.

Really delicious, with very friendly service. I especially appreciated that the staff wiped down the table thoroughly for each guest. You also get a glass of water right away. Tasty, affordable, and definitely worth a visit!"

In the latter section (a hop, skip and a jump from the Municipal Market of Chania) lies one of the jewels of the city – Iordanis Bougatsa. A family-owned bakery that has been delighting tastebuds for 100 years, and I couldn’t wait to try it for myself.
