Nearby, Zum Dürnbräu is a more casual option for classic Bavarian dishes (the succulent duck is not to be missed). Other major mainstays for fine dining include Little London grill for your good German steaks and Brenner Grill, a vast open grill that feels ripped from the ‘90s (positive!) for its vast dining room and see-and-be-seen professional air.

From the ivy-covered façade to the vaulted dining room ceiling, everything about this stylish restaurant set in a 16th-century grain mill is appealing. The kitchen interprets Bavarian dishes in a modern fashion, with a concise menu focusing on locally sourced fish and game, though a smattering of vegetarian dishes are also available. A prix-fixe weekday lunch menu offers four small courses (including vegetarian options) for under €20.

Pfistermühle is known for two things: its cuisine and its atmosphere. The menu changes with the seasons and is continually reinterpreted to keep it fresh. Many products are sourced locally, including wines from Franconia, an area north of Munich.

Situated on the grounds of a 16th-century mill, just a hop and a skip away from Marienplatz, you'll find Pfistermühle, one of the capital's best destinations for gourmet German food. Picture fresh fish straight from Zungenbecken Lake's Ammersee, pasture-raised veal from upper Bavaria, and Tegernsee cheeses utilized to create new spins on traditional German fares with dainty garnishes and artsy plating — you've got Pfistermühle. Go for lunch and dine on its juicy ochsenfilet, a dish of ox with a savory knochenmark (bone marrow) crust and a house shallot sauce.

I had a reservation for two, sadly my friend bailed on me as he got sick. Therefore I ended up at the restaurant 45 minutes before my reservation time. I asked them if me showing up alone is a problem for them, but apparently that has been misunderstood as after my drinks order - I had to wait for about 30mins.

Words like “relaxing” and “cozy” don’t often come to mind when you think of German restaurants. But this place, set in a romantic riverside building, is anything but standard. Start with a glass of champagne accompanied by canapes such as foie gras and parmesan ham.

Restaurant Pfistermühle is located at the Platzl Hotel in the restored building of the former ducal flour mill from 1573. It’s a cozy place with fine Bavarian cuisine. The food, wine, presentation, and service were outstanding.
