A wonderfully idyllic place to dine with fantastic food on offer, Ratskeller is a must visit while in Münich’s Old Town. As you descend down the grand stonestaircase into the restaurant, you would be right in thinking that Ratskeller looks more like an extravagant monastery than a restaurant. Its coved ceilings lined with mahogany, stain glass windows and the beautiful wooden chairs and tables make this a wonderful dining experience.

Smack dab on Marienplatz, complete with elaborately painted ceilings and a swath of underground dining space that feels more medieval than 21st century, Ratskeller has been wowing the hungry folks of Munich and otherwise for centuries. Its menu boasts loads of Bavarian and German fares, while also highlighting more specific regions such as Franconia. Treat yourself to a stone mug of the Franziskaner Kellerbier — you're dining in a keller (cellar) afterall — and a bowl of the long-hailed Ratskeller kartoffelsuppe.

This traditional Munich business looks back on a history spanning some 150 years.

Auch wenn der Ratskeller direkt am Marienplatz liegt: Die Gefahr, hier nur unter Touristen zu Abend zu essen, ist ziemlich gering. Schon, weil man ihnen in den Gewölben unter dem Rathaus ganz gut aus dem Weg gehen kann - der Ratskeller ist nämlich riesengroß. Es gibt hier unzählige kleine und große Stuben, wir empfehlen etwa die "Arche Noah" mit ihren Deckenmalereien oder den urigen Gastraum "Julius Echter".

The new Rathaus, or town hall in English, is the large gothic building in the middle of Marienplatz and has served as Munich’s town hall since 1874. Located in the basement of the Rathaus, is the Ratskeller, a very traditional Bavarian restaurant and beer cellar. The tables are covered in white table cloths and decorated with small flowers, and the low ceilings are covered in beautiful paintings.

Dinner at Ratskeller München Rest your weary feet after a day of exploring in the underbelly of the city. The Ratskeller is definitely a tourist stop, but in this case, it is OK. The Neues Rathaus houses a traditional Bavarian Bier Keller-restaurant with traditional beamed, and frescoed ceilings, lanterns, and Bavarian dressed Frà¤uleins. This little gem is truly the place to get your fill of sausages, schnitzel, sauerbraten and every other German dish you can think of.

We went to Ratskeller because, well it feels like you have to go to Ratskeller when you stay in old town. It is located below the “New Town Hall” and is made of a sprawling dining room with several bars. We ended up in one of the smaller bars that also served cocktails to avoid the noise and crowds of the main dining room.

It’s a slice of Munich’s history, having opened its doors back in 1874. Located in the bustling Marienplatz, this spot is where traditional Bavarian cuisine has been celebrated for generations. Every time I visit, I’m struck by the timeless charm of the place.

A very interesting place to have lunch or dinner could also be the Ratskeller below the town hall. It’s actually surprisingly big and beautiful. There are colorful murals adorning the ceilings and it’s quite the lively place.

Located in the inner courtyard of the city hall, you’ll find the Ratskeller which serves traditional Bavarian cuisine and beer and has been open since 1874. It has been rated as one of the top places to eat in Munich!

I little more upscale, but still traditional, would be the Ratskeller (basement of Rathaus) or Zum Augustiner, near Stachus on Neuhauser Straße.
