What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Diners praise the authentic German cuisine, generous portions, and the warm, historic atmosphere with its unique murals. However, some reviews point to inconsistent service, with staff sometimes perceived as rude or inattentive, impacting the overall dining experience.
"The food is authentic German! We had beef tongue, meat loaf and grilled pork.
It is delicious it’s moist and very tender ! Turned out we ordered double of it lol
The atmosphere is cozy and rustic deco.
The waiter (black shirt) is very kind and nice.
We had such a great meal and time there!!"

"If you are looking for an authentic experience with German food, this is the place to be. The food can be quite good, depending on what you choose, but you can also end up with a bad meal. We ordered the veal schnitzel with fried potatoes and green sauce, as well as the pork chop with mashed potatoes. The veal schnitzel and the green sauce were excellent and I can only recommend it. The pork chop had room for improvement as it was quite salty and dry and the mashed potatoes tasted sour. The service was friendly and fast and the ambiance is pleasant. Try to reserve a table in advance and ask to sit outside. The restaurant has lots of capacity, so you can also come spontaneously, but you might need to sit inside."

"Excellent German food, lots of different delicious and filling options for any taste, very nice atmosphere, and so much history behind this restaurant. The staff speak fantastic English and are great. Kudos to Nicu on his impeccable English, exemplary customer service skills, and much appreciated recommendations. I look forward to returning."

Restaurants in Frankfurt
There aren't many classic Apfelwein locales left, but this is one of them. It's just as it has been since the end of the 19th century: walls covered with giant paintings darkened with age, giant stoneware pitchers called Bembels, glasses that are ribbed to give greasy hands traction, long tables that can seat 12 people, schmaltzy music, hearty food with daily specials, and, as is traditional, no beer. Try this one if you want to truly capture the spirit of Old Sachsenhausen.
Frankfurt's Best Authentic Restaurants
There is a certain kind of German restaurant that is traditional, has a strong heritage, and is popular among both tourists and locals. It may no longer be the absolutely most authentic place ever, but is still rather nice. Think "Hofbräuhaus” in Munich. This is the kind of place that Zum Gemalten Haus has become (and even more so, its still quite acceptable next-door neighbor, Wagner’s). On the one hand, the atmosphere is friendly and communicative, everyone talks to strangers and nobody stays lonely for long. Service is quick, food is generally quite OK, and you get the vibe of a place that has about a century of tradition to live up to. On the other hand: value for money is not so hot, waiters tend to be a little full of themselves, and the slightly conservative (albeit tolerant) scene is not to every young person’s liking. Main dishes €6-18; per-glas cider €1.80. In sum: An institution worth knowing, but I wouldn’t go there every week.

Eat like a god in Frankfurt – the best cider taverns
Beer is strictly off limits in this family-run establishment with its own cider press – and there’s none in the neighbouring “Zum gemalten Haus” either. Just a few steps further on in the traditional hostelries of old Sachsenhausen (e.g. Dauth-Schneider, Fichtekränzi and Atschel) cider is served by the “bembel” – an earthenware cider jug. And if you want a cider shandy, you’ll have to settle for mineral water in your traditional lozenge-cut “Geripptes” glass.

Yes, it has the delicious food and Apfelwein necessary for a top Apfelweinlokal, but it also has endearing murals. In the warmer months, take advantage of the biergarten where the paintings follow you outside.
Frankfurt Germany - travel guide and information from German Sights
The most well-known (and most popular with tourists) experience is at the apple wine taverns in Sachsenhausen, but there are also some smaller, equally interesting options, such as the cosy Zum Gemalten Haus or the historic Fichtekränzi, which is famous for its rustic atmosphere and hearty local cuisine.
