Reviews Summary

Schweine Janes is a beloved institution in Düsseldorf's Altstadt, celebrated for its incredibly flavorful and generously portioned German comfort food, especially the renowned pork knuckle. Diners rave about the delicious taste, fast service, and the authentic, rustic atmosphere. However, the small size of the establishment means seating is limited, and some visitors have noted the presence of beggars in the surrounding area.

"Love the whole-in-a-wall vibe, the crackling sound of the rotisserie and the melt-in-your-mouth pork roast.

An old-town legend that didn’t disappoint.

Note that you order a sandwich (Brötchen with pork roast or something else), that’s considered a take-away and you are not supposed to take up table space with your take-away. There are very few seatings. Under 20 seats inside and 16 outside."

"On a very, very busy day in this lovely city, I expected not to get a table here. There was a table available in the corner outside, where I enjoyed an Altbier while watching all the people walking past. The service was very fast and staff were very friendly. I enjoyed a very delicious Schweinshaxe with Sauerkraut and my husband enjoyed Bratwurst. Both were served with Bratkartoffeln, which was also delicious. I highly recommend this place, as the food is excellent, staf is really nice, with fast service. Atmosphere sitting outside is enjoyable, even on a very busy Saturday afternoon."

The Best Restaurants In Düsseldorf's Aldstadt, Germany

Located in the center of Aldstadt on one of Düsseldorf’s oldest streets, Bolkerstraße, Schweine Janes has been a go-to place for traditional German comfort food for over 30 years. While classics like schnitzel making an appearance on the menu, Schweine Janes is best known for its variety of grilled and roasted cuts of pork and beef, especially the s chweinehaxe (roasted ham hock). While certainly not the lightest of meals, it’s perfect on a chilly day and great when washed down with a stein of one of the restaurant’s reasonably priced local beers.

19 Best Things To Do in Düsseldorf, Picked By Experts

If you’re headed for a meal at Schweine Janes, arrive hungry, because this is serious German comfort food and the portions are enormous. Never mind the noisy ambience – you’re here to eat: grilled leg of pork, roasted pork, pork liver, Wiener schnitzel, pork on a skewer, and that’s just one corner of the menu. Top marks go to the Schweine brötchen, tender chunks of breaded pork in a soft roll, but the Schweinshaxe is a rite of passage: succulent pork knuckle roasted on a spit and plated with Germany’s ubiquitous potatoes and sauerkraut.
