Reviews Summary
Bautzner Tor offers a unique dining experience with its immersive DDR-era atmosphere and generous portions of authentic German cuisine. While many praise the cozy ambiance, friendly service, and delicious traditional dishes like schnitzel and Sauerbraten, some reviews mention that certain dishes can be average for the price, and the overall experience might be impacted by smoking within the establishment.
"If you are looking for delicious food, a time-travelling experience, a familiar atmosphere, local Beer come to Bautzner Tor"

"The other reviews seem very generous. We had high expectations of the pork schnitzel as the highest recommended dish, but it was a disappointment for us and for the price. Very average plate, the potatoes and breading were quite good but the meat and veg were like you can get anywhere from frozen. The solyanka soup was quite delicious though. Beer on tap was okay, nothing special. The service is very friendly and the pub is beautiful. Maybe the schnitzel chef had an off day."

"On holiday in Dresden, I wanted Schnitzel and to find a place that wasn't for the tourists. Enter Bautzner Tor. We checked it out during the day and were really put off by the facade but decided to try it anyway. I'm really glad we did as this is a 'don't judge a book by its cover' situation. Inside was such funky decor, like you're sitting in your grandmother's lounge. We were served quickly (extra impressive as the one waiter at the time was also dealing with a large table). The pork schnitzel hit the spot. I recommend booking in advance or getting in early. We were there at 1715 on Weds, and it was already quite busy. I'm not sure if this is always or just a December thing, but definitely reserve."

A city guide to Dresden, eastern Germany's rebuilt cultural masterpiece
Bautzner Tor: On entering this pub, you’ll be forgiven for wondering if you’ve accidentally walked into a museum, as its large central room is stuffed full of defunct East German gadgets. In fact, this is the official brewery tap of craft beer company Neustädter Hausbrauerei. Local beer in Dresden is excellent, so try whatever special is in season, as well as sampling the Rot, Helles and Hanf options, available year-round.
Dresden, Beer City on the Elbe
You’ll feel like you’ve walked into your offbeat aunt’s living room in this Neustadt-area pub that cranks up the Ostalgie. Hardwood floors scuffed by the footsteps of countless visitors, tiffany lamps, old TVs, mint-green baseboard paneling topped by wallpapered walls, candlelight, eclectic décor (a mix of DDR-era placards and old beer placards from the region): the quirky Bautzner Tor feels part well-worn local watering hole, part period piece. The beer selection is modest but good, and mainly regional.
