Fit for modern day royalty (or just global politicians), when former US President Bill Clinton visited the city he came to Brauhaus Malzmühle. Located in the heart of the Old Town, this 150-year old family-run brewery and its adjacent restaurant are famous for hearty regional fare and classic German food. Try the poetic sounding dish called “Heaven and Earth”, which comes with black pudding, fried onions, mashed potatoes, and stewed apples; or opt for the „Brauhaus platter”, piled high with rump a steak, filets of turkey and pork, vegetables, fried potatoes and hollandaise sauce.

Schon der erste deutsche Bundeskanzler Konrad Adenauer und der damalige US-Präsident Bill Clinton mischten sich vor Jahren unter die Gäste im Brauhaus zur Malzmühle und sollen sich dort das eine oder andere Mühlen Kölsch gegönnt haben. Diese Sorte ist neben dem Koch'schen Malzbier mit Alkoholgehalt das bekannteste Bier der „Brauerei zur Malzmühle“. Dazu gibt es deftige Brauhausküche mit vielen kölschen Spezialitäten – den Halven Hahn zum Beispiel, oder auch Sauerbraten mit Klößen, Sahnehering mit Kartoffeln oder Himmel und Äd.

The Brauerei zur Malzmühle ("Brewery at the Malt Mill") is a traditional Kölsch brewery and restaurant at Heumarkt No. 6. The brewhouse was founded by Hubert Koch in 1858, which makes it one of the oldest in the city, and was originally known as the "Bier und Malzextrakt Dampfbrauerei Koch, Cöln" ("Beer and Malt Extract Steam Brewery, Cologne"). In 1901 Hubert's son Jakob Koch took over the brewery and turned it into a popular meeting place for locals, especially the well-off traders in the neighboring wholesale market hall.

My favourite Kölsch after Päffgen, Mühlen is brewed at the Brauerei zur Malzmühle (Brewery at the Malt Mill). The brewery was founded in 1858 by Hubert Koch as the ‘Bier und Malzextrakt Dampfbrauerei Koch, Cöln‘ (Beer and Malt Extract Steam Brewery, Cologne) and in 1912 the brewery was taken over by the brewer Gottfried Joseph Schwartz, who gave it its current name. Today, the brewery operates a traditional beer hall, a restaurant, a craft beer bar and a hotel (where some rooms come with taps).

That may be why the Rhineland-style Sauerbraten is still the front-runner here in Cologne’s second-oldest brewery restaurant, the Brauerei zur Malzmühle. But there are many, many other options if you’re looking for an extensive tour of brewery restaurants — with or without Sauerbraten and hearty traditional dishes such as “Himmel un Äd” (Heaven and Earth), pork knuckle, and bratwurst. After all, Cologne is the only city that is permitted to brew its famous Kölsch beer.

Das kölsche Brauhaus Sünner im Walfisch liegt oberhalb der Deutzer Brücke, ganz in der Nähe des Alten Markts und des historischen Rathauses. Das bekannte Sünner Kölsch wird in dieser Brauerei schon seit 1830 nach traditionellem Rezept mit rheinischem Wasser gebraut. Over here, Colognians simply refer to it as Malzmühle, one of Cologne's oldest traditional breweries. Its been serving up traditional Cologne cuisine and Kölsch beer since the 1850s and has even survived World War II. Many Cologne residents frequent the brewery, making it the perfect place to get the real Cologne experience.

My next favorite spot is Brauerei zur Malzmühle; in fact, I really liked it here. The Mühlen Kölsch was great, the building was cozy with a historic feeling, and this place had the friendliest service of all the brauhauses we visited. They also had some delicious food.

There were several tables on the narrow sidewalk outside of the Brauerei zur Malzmühle, but they were all occupied as we approached, so we entered the restaurant.
