What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Rutz is lauded as an exceptional fine dining experience, with guests praising its innovative dishes, exquisite presentation, and impeccable service, often calling it one of the best meals they've ever had. While many find it worth every penny, some reviews suggest that while the food is good, it may not always meet the extraordinary expectations associated with a three-Michelin-star establishment, with occasional critiques on wine pairings not meeting personal taste.
"Rutz takes such a different approach to food from other Michelin places, all in Bavaria, that I have been to on my current trip to Germany. They say that they are into preserving food and being sustainable. One of my waiters also told me that the kitchen is not into making anything sweet. The techniques that they use on their food are quite interesting, and that leads to a somewhat unique dining experience. For example, the usual table-side saucing is replaced by table-side sprinkling of freeze-dried sauce droplets. The flavors of each element in their dishes seem to be intense on their own, but are quite harmonious when experienced together. The food is borderline ingenious vs self serving. My favorite of the menu were the bitter salad and the kohlrabi. The caviar can be skipped; even though, the Berlin royal caviar is quite different from the Thomas Keller one that I am used to in California. Oh, and they served cat fish... Service is top notch. Ambience is quite interesting with a display of jars which are full of preserved ingredients. Tableware has this earthen tone that intends to give out a more sustainability and demure vibes."

"We went here today as a treat for a special birthday and we couldn't have asked for better service and more delicious food. It was evident that every aspect of the dining experience had been considered. We would like to extend a special thanks to Falco, who was super responsive prior to arrival, and took the time to find out that it was a special occasion for us and arranged for a personalised menu. We had the 6 course menu with wine pairing mixed with non-alcoholic pairing, which featured seasonal ingredients such as wild garlic and rhubarb. Leeks and lamb also featured which, with us being from Wales, were appreciated. A genuine thank you for making this special occasion a memorable one."

""The spring menu at Rutz is truly exceptional. Having dined at several Michelin three-star establishments, I can confidently say that Rutz stands out as the finest. The menu showcases remarkable creativity, and the chef demonstrates extraordinary skill in balancing and elevating the flavors of each dish. Ingredients that I might typically overlook in everyday life were transformed into delightful surprises. Every cut of meat was impeccably prepared—juicy, tender, and exquisitely aromatic. I would rate this experience a 10 out of 10. The chef’s talent is nothing but genius. The restaurant itself doesn’t look luxury, instead it is small and intimate."

Restaurants in Berlin
The narrow, unassuming facade of the only three-Michelin-starred restaurant in Berlin, tucked away on a sleepy stretch of Chausseestrasse, belies the elegant interior and stellar food you'll find inside. "Inspiration" tasting menus of six or eight courses make the most of ingredients like lobster, trout, or veal and combine unusual items like black radishes and mushrooms, or asparagus and wild violets; you can find more casual and heartier fare at the Weinbar downstairs.

Rutz is an upmarket wine bar, shop and restaurant, proudly sporting a Michelin star, and well worth an extended visit. Downstairs in the bar a wall of wine meets new arrivals, while food is served in modern surroundings on the first floor. Chef Marco Müller – who heads out into the countryside to source his regional produce and meat – excels at creating German and European dishes with a modern twist: Bison hip with aniseed, or teppanyaki red mullet, for example.

Rutz is a wine-lover’s dream: a wall lined floor-to-ceiling with bottle after glorious bottle. A Mitte pioneer when it opened on a not-so-nice street in 2001, the restaurant has evolved with the times, earning its second Michelin star in 2017. You can chat over glasses of wine and meaty dishes in the downstairs wine bar; upstairs is the classy taupe-colored restaurant and outdoor terrace, with tables crammed with half-finished glasses left over from pairings.

The Best of Berlin 2024
Restaurants like Nobelhart & Schmutzig and Rutz simplified their offerings, opting for shorter, cheaper menus and multiple seatings instead to make that financially viable. We witnessed the same pattern across the scene, while at the same time stalwarts like Tim Raue and CODA stayed the course of menu-driven luxury fine dining, proving there’s still room for splurging - just not at the scale of what saw five years ago. And in the end, perhaps this is merely a necessary correction to a fine dining bubble that was never destined to endure in a city like Berlin—one notably lacking in an abundance of “old money” and the cushion of corporate expense accounts.
The best Michelin star restaurants in Berlin
The entrance to the Rutz on Chausseestraße in Mitte looks rather inconspicuous, but the idyllic inner courtyard terrace, overgrown with vines, vegetable shrubs and garden herbs, is probably one of the most beautiful places in Berlin in the summer. And the creative Mediterranean dishes that star chef Marco Müller conjures up in the kitchen are also worth seeing and eating well: In 2022, the Guide Michelin honored the wine bar Rutz with three stars for the third time. While lunch menus tend to be offered for people working in the area, inspiration menus with six to ten courses are on the menu in the evening.

The wine list hits tables on both floors and features almost 900 bottles, 400 of which are dedicated to riesling.
