The Best Spots for Cheap Eats in Berlin

CharlottenburgWhat you’re getting: Fish soup, €4.50Another Berlin institution, this bustling indoor market has an older, more established crowd and employees who really know how to turn on the “Berlin charm” (it’s up to you whether we’re being sarcastic or not). It’s the place to go for fresh or smoked fish, including an outstanding selection of herring, and one of the best lunch counters in town. The fish soup comes in a wide, shallow bowl with a tower of white fish in the middle, topped with a mountain of dill.

Berlin Shopping – Best Shops and Markets

A trip to Rogacki is like stepping back in time: beaming attendants in green, monogrammed uniforms stand to attention behind row after row of sparkling vitrines stuffed with all manner of prepared produce. The Rogacki store was founded in 1928 in Wedding, where current owner Dietmar Rogacki’s grandfather would pull his cart of smoked fish to the Alexanderplatz market. He moved to the current location near Bismarckstrasse in 1932 when he was offered an old open-air steel foundry.

Don’t expect service with a smile at this iconic west Berlin delikatessen. However, what the ladies might lack in charm they make up for in their dedication to some of Berlin’s best smoked fish. The canteen-like Rogacki has been around for over 80 years and it’s well known for its perfectly smoked eel, smoked on site every day.

If you want a particularly stand-out experience, try Rogacki in Charlottenburg. This delicatessen is not only where many Berliners buy their fish, but also where they meet to enjoy delicious dishes and a glass of wine for lunch. Reminiscent of a market hall, it’s been serving up incredible food for over 90 years – it was a traditional street food market before the concept of street food even existed!

The Best Jewish Food in Berlin

Rogacki is a 90-year-old deli in the old West Berlin neighborhood of Charlottenburg with what many Jewish Berliners consider to be the best smoked fish in the city. This family-owned business started small in a former stable. Although their specialties are classic German (and not very Jewish) dishes, Rogacki is nevertheless adored by the older Jewish women of the neighborhood.

Rogacki has been at home in Charlottenburg since 1932, both as a daytime restaurant and as a delicatessen. Dishes are conjured up from the delicatessen range, like fillet tips with chanterelles or stir-fried vegetables with wild rice. Above all though, Rogacki is about fried, steamed or smoked fish.

Seafood in Berlin : berlin

It's not a restaurant, but for me the seafood stands at Rogacki are a must-visit at least once a month. The baked fish with sides of potato salad and pickled celeriac - to die for. And pretty cheap (considering the portion are huge).
