Reviews Summary

Konnopke's Imbiss is a historic Berlin institution renowned for its currywurst, offering a classic street food experience under the U-Bahn tracks. While many praise the authentic taste and nostalgic atmosphere, some reviews suggest a decline in quality and a rise in prices, making it feel more like a tourist spot. Despite mixed opinions on whether it's still the 'best,' it remains a popular and iconic stop for visitors seeking traditional German fast food.

"Saw this place on Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" and I must say that it has stood the test of time. Definitely worth a visit, even if it is far from many of the main attractions. The wait is worth it! Nice staff as well. Try the currywurst paired with pommes frites and a beer!"

Samir Jaluria

"One of the most well known and oldest Currywurst place in Berlin, there are many debates which one is the best.
📍Place: it is located at Eberswalder Straße UBahn station, so easily approachable from downtown. It's basically a kiosk which has some outside seats covered from rain, but it's not heated in the winter so dress accordingly.
🍛 Food: we have tired the classic setup, 1 currywurst with fries, ketchup and mayo for €6.9. (2 currywursts would be €10.9). Overall it tasted good, however I would have expected a little more curry flavour overall, the wurst had quite neutral taste. Fries are from frozen potatoes, nothing extra.
👩🏻‍🍳 Service: it's basically an over the counter service from a kiosk, they speak English and explain the menu if it's not clear. You get your food immediately, so it's up to its name."

Viktor Lakatos

"I don’t like this seriously, it is very salty but since this is Germany’s traditional food, I think we tourists should probably give it s try. I like the store’s design I like it open-air. Overall service was friendly."

Street food in Berlin | The city's best street food stalls

After you’ve eaten your way around the world and can’t face another Asian-fusion mini-burger on artisan dough, it’s time to remember where you are and what made this city’s global food reputation what it is – yes, it’s time to chow down on the humble currywurst, that staple of German street cuisine. Head to the railway arches under Prenzlauerberg’s Eberswalderstrasse U-bahn station and join the queue lining up patiently for a paper tray of chopped bratwurst, ketchup and curry powder at this historic Berlin institution which has been doling out the best chopped sausages in town on the same site since the 1920s and still, reputedly, uses the Konnopke family’s secret ketchup sauce recipe…. Must try: The currywurst (obviously).

Even when it's the dead of winter to the the hottest day in summer, there will be a queue for the most famous fast food in Berlin, the currywurst: a pork sausage that’s boiled, fried, cut, and then slathered in ketchup, spices, and curry powder. Konnopke, perched under the U-Bahn tracks in Prenzlauer Berg since 1930, makes the most famous wurst in town. Like the food itself, the setting is simple: a food stand where you order from a window and an area next door where you can sit if you’d like, though most simply stand outside while they nosh.

Under the tracks of the elevated U2 subway line is Berlin's most beloved sausage stand. Konnopke's is a family business that's been around since 1930 and, though there are several options on the menu, this place is famous for its currywurst, which is served on a paper tray with a plastic prong that can be used to spear the sauce-covered sausage slices; with French fries and a pilsner, this is one of the quintessential Berlin meals.

The Best Places to Eat in Berlin — Restaurants and More

Currywurst — pork sausage that's boiled, fried, sliced, and slathered in ketchup, spices, and curry powder — is Berlin's most famous fast food, and I think the best wurst in town is at Konnopke's Imbiss, located beneath the U-Bahn tracks in Prenzlauer Berg. You can't miss this mustard-yellow kiosk or the ever-present line of eager diners; after all, the business has been perfecting its currywurst recipe since 1930. The menu is short and simple: There's currywurst (and a vegan version), a few other types of sausages, fries and potato salad, and, of course, beer.

Aged to perfection: A guide to Berlin’s oldest eateries

Konnopke’s Imbiss, just shy of 100 years old, has been a staple just south of U-Bahnhof Eberswalder Straße since 1930. Linda Konnopke, daughter of the managing director and a fourth-generation member of the family business, explains, “We survived only because we as a family always worked together and stood behind it…During the war, you had to be creative and conjure up something from what you had,” she explains. “My family in the former DDR had no way of getting hold of pig casings for production; thus the idea for currywurst without casing was born.

They claim to have been open since 1930 which goes against the story of currywurst’s origin, unless of course they served plain wurst up until 1949. Nonetheless, this retro looking yellow metal booth under the iron arches of the train line is an institution in Berlin. The sausage was a little bit on the dry side but the curry ketchup was thick and lightly spicy and flavorful, the french fries very satisfying, and the ladies behind the counter just the right kind of grumpy to add to the experience.

My Favourite Restaurants in Berlin

For curry wurst, I recommend (after having tried pretty much all of them), Konnopke´s Imbiss underneath the train lines at Eberswalder. They’ve been doing this since the 1930s and their curry wurst is as fantastic as it is cheap (roughly 5€ if you add fries and a sauce to it). As for kebabs, everyone will most likely send you to Mustafa´s Kebab on the Mehringdamm, but while it’s a fantastic kebab, I just don’t feel it’s worth the huge queue.

Located in Prenzlauer Berg, this snack institution has been living under the U2 train line for nearly 100 years. They’ve consistently sold Wurst during that time, except for during War shortages when potato pancakes had to suffice. Along with Currywurst, you’ll find plenty of German street food including Bratwurst (grilled sausage), Bockwurst (white pepper sausage), Gurken (pickles), Kartoffelsalat, and vegan options.
