Linda Konnopke, daughter of the managing director and a fourth-generation member of the family business, explains, “We survived only because we as a family always worked together and stood behind it…During the war, you had to be creative and conjure up something from what you had,” she explains. “My family in the former DDR had no way of getting hold of pig casings for production; thus the idea for currywurst without casing was born.

They claim to have been open since 1930 which goes against the story of currywurst’s origin, unless of course they served plain wurst up until 1949. Nonetheless, this retro looking yellow metal booth under the iron arches of the train line is an institution in Berlin. The sausage was a little bit on the dry side but the curry ketchup was thick and lightly spicy and flavorful, the french fries very satisfying, and the ladies behind the counter just the right kind of grumpy to add to the experience.

For curry wurst, I recommend (after having tried pretty much all of them), Konnopke´s Imbiss underneath the train lines at Eberswalder. They’ve been doing this since the 1930s and their curry wurst is as fantastic as it is cheap (roughly 5€ if you add fries and a sauce to it). As for kebabs, everyone will most likely send you to Mustafa´s Kebab on the Mehringdamm, but while it’s a fantastic kebab, I just don’t feel it’s worth the huge queue.
