At the pinnacle of the village near the bell tower, you’ll find standouts like the buzzy L’Envers du Décor, an upscale modern wine bar and bistro known for its regional French dishes using local produce at affordable prices, like its suprême de volaille and tartare de bœuf tranché au couteau. Try the pies at Comptoir des Arts, notably the tarte au citron meringuée, which is best enjoyed under their shaded patio, or head to Les Délices du Roy – La Cave for a drink. You also can’t leave Saint-Émilion without picking up a box of the region’s unique macarons at Fabrique de Macarons.

L’Envers du Decor is another address featuring good food and fine wines. Situated only 20 meters from the tourist office, this somewhat rustic restaurant boasts a large yet tranquil courtyard for outdoor dining on warm summer days (or nights), with friendly, knowledgeable staff and quality wines by the glass, including some older vintages. A set menu for around 30 euros night include Arcachon oysters, grilled duck breast (magret de canard) or entrecôte with red wine sauce and shallots, and a smooth crème brûlée.

It’s hard to imagine these days when you seemingly can’t throw a stone without hitting a wine bar in the charming medieval town, but L’Envers du Décor was Saint-Émilion’s very first wine bar when it opened in 1987. Locals and visitors alike have long loved this Saint-Émilion restaurant, and it was the very first restaurant we ourselves ever visited in Saint-Émilion. Since 2017 it changed hands and has been owned by the same family that owns Château Pavie.

L’Envers du Decor which can be translated as “ behind the scenes” is a bistro which for 30 years had been functioned as a clubhouse for the local wine industry. It is located in the upper part of town just by the Bell Tower, the tallest tower in Saint-Emilion. In 2017, L’Envers du Decor was acquired by the Perse family, owners of first-growth Château Pavie, and Saint-Emilion luxury hotel L’Hostellerie de Plaisance.

L’Envers du Decor is owned by Chateau Pavie and is the causal sister restaurant to two star Michelin ‘La Table de Pavie‘ which is also in Saint Emilion ( La Table de Pavis is amazing but will take at least three hours of your day so book accordingly). L’Envers du Decor has the classic French bistro style and some great seasonal menus. Of course the wine list is excellent as well.

The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the wine, and the owner takes care to know each of the wineries that supply his wine list.

Located in the heart of the village, this charming restaurant offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The food was outstanding and was a highlight for mummy and daddy, even if the kids preferred one of the more relaxed restaurants (of which there are plenty of great ones, such as L’Envers du Décor). Most restaurants offered children’s menus, with the exception of some of the fine dining restaurants where they tended to tailor something to the child.

The restaurant was recently acquired by Gérard Perse, owner of first-growth Château Pavie and nearby luxury hotel L’Hôtel de Pavie. Dishes such as veal liver and slow cooked lamb are the perfect accompaniment for the wines of the region. The food and service are consistently excellent and the restaurant is open 7/7 for lunch and dinner.

One of the best restaurants in Saint Emilion, L’Envers du Decors has chef Bertrand Bordenave preparing his exquisite cuisine with the freshest and finest local ingredients. Recommended dishes include filet mignon, lamb shanks, and for dessert, a Grand Marnier souffle. There’s a lovely garden terrace in the summer.

In the heart of this iconic wine village, a few steps from the bell tower, the picturesque red façade of this bistro catches the eye. Inside lies an elegant vintage décor with a zinc counter and leather bench seating. The menu runs the gamut of classic French staples from calf’s liver to rum baba.

A classic though unpretentious French restaurant and wine bar, L’Envers du Décor is another favourite of mine. The terrace out the back is hard to beat on a hot day. Given its very central location, I don’t find it to be overly touristy, in either its menu offering or its pricing.

We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at L’Envers du Décor in the heart of the village, close to the monolithic church of Saint-Émilion, known for its vibrant atmosphere, traditional food and wine selection. Pre-book or be prepared to queue!

Founded in 1987, L’Envers du Decor is an upscale bistro and wine bar that has a modern and funky atmosphere. It is open every day for both lunch and dinner, and the menu changes with the seasons. Everything here is so fresh.

Simpler, beautiful presentation, lighter dishes at L’Atelier de Candale in a little wine château in a secluded valley just outside of St Emilon overlooking the vineyards

Excellent food and wine as well as very friendly and professional service perfectly handling the gluten free requirements. We'll come again when visiting St Emilion.

L’Envers du Décor 11, rue du Clocher is a well known joint open all year with a lovely terrace in summer and a great wine list yet it’s still nice and casual.
