@travelais steps into a real-life fairytale in Saint-Émilion, a storybook village just 40 minutes from Bordeaux 🍷🏰 Known for its cobblestone lanes, underground catacombs, and legendary wines, Saint-Émilion is where medieval charm meets vineyard magic. The town’s roots date back to the 8th century, when a Breton monk named Émilion took refuge in the limestone caves and sparked a legacy of miracle...

How to spend the perfect day in Saint-Émilion. Just 35 minutes from Bordeaux on the train lies the UNESCO-listed village in the heart of the wine country. Arrive early in the morning and spend some time wandering around the medieval streets. There is lots of historical landmarks to visit like the Monolithic Church and King's Tower. Whilst you’re taking in the sites, don’t miss out on trying a swee...

Reviews Summary

Chai Pascal offers a delightful culinary experience with many praising the impeccable service and delicious, well-prepared French cuisine, particularly the foie gras and duck. The cozy ambiance and excellent wine selection also receive high marks. However, some diners have noted a pushy sales approach for drinks and a less consistent quality in certain meat dishes.

"Good quality food in a pleasant sized room. Staff very attentive and polite. Good grades asp of English if needed. Had the set meal and was very pleased. Pork and Tagliatelle was fantastic. Well cooked food. Wine was good, as expected."

Neil Richardson

"Chai Pascal was so amazing! We enjoyed several of the lunch specials and were not disappointed. The service was the best during our entire week of many different restaurants and bistros in Saint Emilion. Definitely make a reservation so you don’t miss out of this fantastic dining experience."

Sandra Raynor

"The service is impeccable – attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely friendly. Our meal was a highlight, starting with the perfectly seared Foie Gras, rich and meltingly tender, a true taste of luxury. The Pan-Seared Duck Breast was equally impressive, cooked to perfection with a crispy skin and succulent, pink interior, complemented by a delicious sauce.
Their wine list, as expected in this region, is extensive and well-curated, offering fantastic local selections. The staff were excellent at recommending pairings that elevated our meal."

Restaurants in Bordeaux and the Wine Country

This cozy yet stylish restaurant and wine bar is popular with locals in the wine trade. The menu is limited, but made fresh and very good value compared to the generally elevated prices of St-Émilion. Wood tables, lounge chairs, and understated artwork on the original stone walls give it a casual, intellectual vibe.

A Quick Guide to Saint-Émilion, France

The space is beautiful, the menu is simple, the food is outstanding, the wine-list is great, and the prices are not extortionate. Both times we visited, we were blown away with the quality of the food – it’s so good!. On our first visit, we ate starters of pumpkin soup made with pumpkins grown in the granny of our waitress’s garden + house-made terrine with chili/curry/turmeric/paprika, mains of duck breast with truffle potato gratin and parsnip puree with anise, and we shared a cheese board for dessert.

The Top Ten Wine Bars in Bordeaux

Chai Pascal in the heart of the St. Emilion village is known for its selection of regional wines, reasonably priced Grand Crus, and authentic French food. Chai Pascal may be one of the smaller wine bars in Saint Emilion, but it more than makes up for its stature with its welcoming, comfortable atmosphere. The bar is owned by Pascal Fauvel (often seen in the front of the house) and Catherine Papon-Nouvel.

Saint Emilion, a short city guide

A pleasant wine bar where you can also enjoy some rather good food is Chai Pascal (the name is a play on words: chai, meaning wine cellar, is pronounced almost the same way as chez, meaning at someone’s place). It opened a few years ago, with Pascal himself behind the counter. He used to work in one of Paris’s best wine shops but got tired of the big city and moved down to Bordeaux.

Where to Eat in & near Saint-Émilion

Slightly off the beaten track in the town of Saint-Émilion, Pascal Fauvel’s restaurant has the advantage of being open seven days a week and serving a range of traditional French dishes, including andouillette, lamprey (local eel) and cassoulet. The prime tables in winter are close to the open fire. Address: 37 rue Gaudet, Saint-Émilion
