Reviews Summary

Restaurant David Toutain offers an exceptional fine-dining experience with daring, modern French cuisine that highlights seasonal produce and artistic presentation. Diners praise the creativity, flavor balance, and impeccable wine pairings, often calling it a '6-star' experience. While most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few minor service inconsistencies and one concerning incident of finding a foreign object in food have been noted.

"I’ll be honest, I was hesitant on eating here during my time in Paris due to the reviews and what I’ve read online about the service. When eating at a two star Michelin restaurant, the experience isn’t just about the food, but also the hospitality / the service provided.

Well, I’m very happy that my husband and I decided to come and see for ourselves! We had very friendly waiters who made us feel welcome and were striking up friendly conversation beyond the food. They were very friendly, helpful and attentive.

Next, I have to mention that every course was a real treat. The presentation matched well with each dish. Everything we tasted was full of flavor and tasted very good. We also chose to do a wine pairing with our courses, which was probably one of the best wine pairings we’ve had! Each wine paired made so much sense, and even helped elevate some courses.

Thankful for the experience I had here, grateful that it worked out and I took a chance despite what some of the reviews were saying. 😊"

"A two star Michelin restaurant, clearly deserving of a third star.

An excellent gustatory experience. From the door, you can feel the level of excellence that this restaurant exudes. The setting, the service, the details, were all accounted for.

The composition of menu was genius. Chef Toutain’s personality really showed through our dining experience. A progression of flavours that were not overshadowing each other, rather, complimentary to the whole of the menu. I was very impressed by the knife work of all of the plated ingredients. The sauces were complex, but not overwhelming or overpowering. Balanced.

A special thank you to the service staff and particularly the General Manager, Guillaume, as they provided my wife and I an experience that we will not forget!

Thank you to the team at Restaurant David Toutain!"

"A celebrated name in contemporary French gastronomy, holding two Michelin stars, David Toutain’s cuisine is rooted in seasonality, with a strong emphasis on vegetables, purity of flavour, and artistic presentation.

From amuse-bouche to dessert, the execution was flawless - every dish reflected precision in temperature, timing, and presentation. The ingredients were exceptional, with vegetables treated as centrepieces rather than supporting elements. While every course impressed, the fish dish was a standout - executed to perfection.

A few minor details took away from an otherwise faultless experience - occasional stains on cutlery (e.g., sauce on a spoon), and while the maitre’d and sommelier were fantastic, some of the service felt a little less engaged.

That said, the foundation is undeniably there. Wishing them all the best in their pursuit of that third star."

Although two-Michelin-star chef David Toutain's approach may be exasperatingly conceptual for some, others find his earthy, surprising, and inspired concoctions, served in a sleek modern space, utterly thrilling. Each dish is a lesson in contrasts—of temperature, texture, and flavor—as well as a feat of composition: briny oysters, brussels sprouts, and foie gras in a warm potato consommé; creamy raw oysters with tart kiwi and yuzu; crispy pork chips alongside velvety smoked potato puree. Toutain has a particular soft spot for root vegetables and truffles, which he sprinkles liberally throughout dishes like salsify broth with lardo and black truffle.

Where to Eat Good Ratatouille in Paris?

At Agapé Substance in Saint-Germain, David Toutain first dazzled Paris after working with Alain Passard and Marc Veyrat. Now that he owns his own restaurant, his tasting menus, which range in price from 70 to 250 euros, serve some of Paris’ most daring and intriguing cuisine. Consider meals like pan-seared foie gras in a baked potato bouillon with black truffles, a monochromatic white cuttlefish composition with yuba, and virtually transparent Parmesan gnocchi that has been seasoned with the juice obtained from hours of cooking the cheese at very low temperatures.

Best Restaurants in Paris - Le Relais Louis XIII

(Head to relevant newcomers, like Spring, Yamtcha, or David Toutain and you’ll hear a lot of English, Chinese or Russian.) This is a real deal French joint with real deal French food. You’re gifted with warm, oozing Gougeres before the menu even hits the table, terrific bread and butter, and plenty of classics to choose from. The wine list, interestingly helmed by a Japanese sommelier (the only un-French thing about Louis XIII), is extensive with plenty of great, old French wines to savor while you sup.

David Toutain, who brought acclaim to Agapé Substance before jumping ship back in December 2012, returned to the Paris scene with this signature restaurant in 2013. His meticulous and conceptual cooking highlights seasonal produce, with vegetables often playing the starring role. This is by no means a vegetarian restaurant, but Toutain’s ability to bring out the beauty in oft-ignored roots reminds us of his former boss Alain Passard.

Stepping into this modern, clean, minimalist restaurant is like stepping into a coffee house in Stockholm. (Or so we imagine.) The food, too, might be described clean and modern… but also innovative and striking. In the 7th Arrondissement we sat down to chaud/froid eggs with a flourish of cream and maple; white squid cut like long noodles full of the flavor of spring; and pigeon served two ways.
