It's hard to believe one of Paris' most serene, picturesque and dignified restaurants is also located within one of its busiest train stations, but Le Train Bleu, an icon of Parisian dining, is a far cry from the Gare de Lyon's hustle and bustle. Every inch of this place drips with Parisian opulence in the best possible way. It won't be your cheapest meal in Paris, but it might be your most memorable—or at least your most photographed.

This listed dining room - with vintage frescoes and big oak benches - exudes a pleasant air of expectation. Don't expect cutting-edge cooking, but rather fine renderings of French classics. Lobster served on walnut oil-dressed salad leaves is a generous, beautifully prepared starter, as is the pistachio-studded saucisson de Lyon with a warm salad of small ratte potatoes.

Le Train Bleu was founded in 1901 by railroad management higher ups, who hoped to create a lively dining institution as prestigious as the trains coming and going from the station. Located on the first floor of gare de Lyon, this iconic brasserie has kept its traditional décor, and is even listed as a historic monument. Double Michelin-starred chef Michel Rostnag, who took over in 2018, draws inspiration for his menu from the main route from the Mediterranean coast, through Lyon, and all the way to Paris, serving dishes like Dauphiné ravioli, Lyonnaise pike quenelles, and rum baba with homemade punch.

A historic railway restaurant built above Gare du Lyon for the Universal Exhibition in 1901, its glittering, frescoed interior is rivalled only by Versailles’ hall of mirrors. You’d expect such pomp and circumstance to yield poor cooking and faux authenticity, yet thanks to the culinary genius of Michel Rostang, Le Train Bleu is once again une très bonne adresse. A meal here is not cheap (count on at least €70 a head for food) but it’s the stuff Parisian memories are made of, chandeliers sparkling overhead as you’re sequestered in a midnight-blue leather booth.

For a truly unique dining experience, head over to Le Train Bleu for a side dish of awe with your brasserie fare. Located in a sumptuous hidden area in the Gare de Lyon, the setting is what truly takes your breath away, with art deco interiors that include over 40 masterworks arcing across its walls. With a classic list of dishes and a wine list that you might just enjoy a little too much, patrons of Le Train Bleu will be amongst a discerning crowd: Coco Chanel, Salvador Dali, and Brigitte Bardot were notable frequenters of this place.

If I have a train to catch, I’ll always be tempted to head to Le Train Bleu on the way – a visual feast of opulently decorated ceilings and sparkling chandeliers which is accessible without so much as leaving the Gare de Lyon rail station. French in flavor but almost Russian in style, the glitz here is about as subtle as a Swarovski-clad Moulin Rouge dancer riding an elephant through the ticket office – but all the better for it. A breath of fresh air amid the whirlwind of commuters outside, naturally its menus are equally appealing.

I’m not the only one to put this 1900 dining room on the mezzanine level at Paris’ Gare de Lyon train station at the top of my list. Opened in 1901 and first called “the station buffet”, the now-iconic restaurant was designed by architect Marius Toudoire, who also conceived the train station’s exterior and famed clock tower. Several interconnected, high-ceilinged dining rooms take up a whole level of the station, so spacious that you can hear clearly when a server drops a fork or glass across the room.

While dining in train stations generally evokes memories of takeaway containers and cardboard coffee cups, a visit to Le Train Bleu couldn't be more elegant. First opened in 1901, this former Buffet de la Gare hosted artists, actresses, and clothing designers alike, from Coco Chanel to Salvador Dali. Today, the restaurant's stunning interior features sparkling chandeliers and intricately painted ceilings, as well as massive windows overlooking the swarms of train-bound travelers in the station below.

If you come to Paris and pack your days so tight with activities and dining experiences that you absolutely cannot find a free hour to eat at Le Train Bleu, at least make it a priority to stop in and look at the decor. Set on the second floor of the Gare de Lyon (yes, the train station) you can find this super lavish space complete with crystal chandeliers and frescoes. The baroque-style walls and ceiling reminisce the gilded halls of Versailles.

We’ve been to Gare de Lyon so many times over the years to catch the TGV to Avignon and always admired the Train bleu staircase from the inside of the station. After Easter week in Provence, we came back and our little gamin aged 6 asked what it was. Un train bleu, qu’est-ce que c’est?

The charm of the Belle-Epoque has been preserved here with nice paintings, sculptures and other works of art everywhere. Chef Jean Pierre Hocquet serves traditional gourmet French cuisine, accompanied by excellent wines from a prestigious wine cellar. Not cheap but recommended.
