Reviews Summary

L'Ami Jean is lauded for its exceptional, authentic French cuisine and lively bistro atmosphere, with many highlighting signature dishes like the rice pudding. While some find the portions generous and the service attentive, a few reviewers mention the intimate space can feel cramped, and some express concerns about the value for money given the price point.

"Superb meal!
Rich and delicious food.
Fun, knowledgeable service.
We enjoyed the tight space and shared table.
Rice pudding is mandatory.
Come hungry.
Stephane is the real deal."

"L’Ami Jean continues to be one of my favorite restaurants in Paris. The menu changes but the quality stays the same. Most recently I went for lunch and enjoyed an incredible sea bass (one of the best I’ve ever had) with vegetables and a pork dish alongside their signature mashed potatoes. And no L’Ami Jean meal is complete without their famous rice pudding. So so delicious and the perfect ending to what’s always a great meal!"

Tausha C.

"People seemed harsh in their reviews, but honestly I really liked this place. We tried a few Michelin stars in France and were left unimpressed with most. For us, this was a busy tight space like reviews had said but the food was honestly delicious. We stayed away from the dishes that had the burning herbs (per reviews) and we overheard some of our neighbors not liking them as well. We ordered the Parmesan soup (delicious! And surprisingly light and refreshing, sorry forgot to take pictures), the charcuterie, and the sea bass. Everything was well seasoned and used great quality ingredients. Service was very good- our waiter was fluent in several languages and surprisingly fast.

Give it a shot- we were pleasantly surprised!"

The 26 Best Restaurants In Paris - Paris

L’Ami Jean is a lively, rickety bistro with mismatched furniture and crooked artwork, and the food is excellent and hearty—think roasted veal cheek and confit beef shoulder. The €98 tasting menu includes smaller portions of the greatest hits, plus seasonal standouts like stuffed butternut squash and a foie gras-packed tuna belly “sandwich” topped with marinated melon. No matter what, you'll want to zero in on their famous rice pudding, which comes in a wooden bowl with a big serving spoon that you’ll be tempted to use as your own personal utensil.

This long-running Basque address is an ongoing hit thanks to chef Stéphane Jégo. Excellent bread from baker Jean-Luc Poujauran is a perfect nibble when slathered with a tangy, herby fromage blanc - as are starters of sautéed baby squid on a bed of ratatouille. Tender veal shank comes de-boned with a lovely side of baby onions and broad beans with tiny cubes of ham, and house-salted cod is soaked, sautéed and doused with an elegant vinaigrette...

Work up an appetite milling about nearby museums—Musée Rodin and Musée YSL would be my first choices—then book in at this refreshingly raucous 7th arrondissement bistro with a devoted fan base. It’s easy to see why it’s earned such a cult following, both among locals and foreigners in search of the quintessential bistro experience. Stepping through the warm, wooden facade transports you to a bygone Paris: the red leather banquettes and tiled floors haven’t changed much since the space’s past life as a Basque pub in the 1930s, and there’s a conviviality among the communal-style tables that means phones only really come out to snap quick photos of Stéphane Jego’s divine food.

If getting a close-up of the Eiffel Tower is on your list, making a reservation at the neighboring L’Ami Jean should be as well. It’s a noisy, rickety café with mismatched furniture and misaligned artwork, with good and hearty meals like roasted veal cheek and beef bourguignon. The tasting menu has smaller servings of the most popular dishes, as well as seasonal standouts such as stuffed butternut squash in the winter and a foie gras-filled tuna belly “sandwich” topped with marinated melon in the late summer.

Chef Stéphane Jego was an early star of the bistronomie movement, elevating traditional bistro fare with the sort of techniques and emphasis on quality ingredients that one might expect from finer dining. His simple, cheerful dining room at Chez l’Ami Jean has not wavered in quality, even though the dining room is filled with visitors expressing delight in foreign tongues. Meat and fish options abound (vegetarians beware), but wild game is the star when in season.

To finish, if you are looking for a decent real French food experience and don’t want to be fleeced in your wallet, then make a visit to L’Ami Jean. This Basque bistro is a little bit off the beaten tourist path, though still a short distance from the Eiffel Tower, which helps to give it a more authentic feel, especially to non tourists. I went with the set lunch menu, at €25, which is simply great value and came with lots of excellent food.
