Reviews Summary

Joséphine Chez Dumonet is celebrated for its authentic, old-school French cuisine and lively bistro atmosphere, with dishes like beef bourguignon and soufflé receiving high praise. While many commend the friendly service and generous portions, a few diners have noted that certain dishes can be overly salty and the pricing, particularly for water, is on the higher side. Despite occasional service inconsistencies, the quality of the food often shines through.

"I came here wanting to try the pigeon millefeuille and the stuffed morels; these did not disappoint! We had a wonderful dinner dining outside al fresco, enjoying the gentle summer evening. The chef and wait staff were so welcoming. In particular, we were looked after by Julien, who also recommended some lovely wines to pair with our dishes - I regret not going with his recommendation of the Mersault to go with the langoustines!
It's great to see how much pride the staff here have for their work."

Samantha C

"We went here to experience good and authentic french dishes. They did not disappoint. The Manager was attentive. The ambience and atmosphere was very nice. Toilets are clean despite the faulty door handle. The portion are big. The casoulet is good enough for three. The beef bourguinon is good for two. As a feedback, it would be nice if the waiter’s could point this out. It was a good dining experience."

Gio

"Excellent food and service. We loved the artichoke starter, the cassoulet and the fish entrees. The house wine is great and well priced. The soufflé was great but the table next to us had the Mille Fiulle which looked amazing. The portions are large, you could easily split the cassoulet."

10 of the best bistros in Paris | Paris holidays

For a delicious sepia-toned experience of pre-war Paris, this beautiful art-nouveau bistro on a chic street in Saint Germain is worth the wound to your wallet. The fact is that old-fashioned bistro cooking in Paris has become almost as expensive as it is rare – thank France's 35-hour working week for making slow cooking so pricey. But if you're craving old-school dishes like morel mushrooms stuffed with foie gras, truffles and country ham; millefeuille of boned pigeon; and bœuf bourguignon, you won't do better than this 1880 vintage dining room.

Chez Dumonet is a true Parisian bistro, with waiters in starched whites, tiled floors and a menu with all of the classics. Order the marinated herring starter and you will be brought a large crock of neatly packed fish from which to serve yourself. As for the main course, Chez Dumonet is renowned for their duck confit, which does not disappoint: crispy on the outside, tender and sticky on the inside.

Paris's most authentic and delicious bistros, and the best dishes they offer

Tucked away at the southern end of shop-busy rue du Cherche-Midi in the 6th arrondissement, Joséphine Chez Dumonet is the Left Bank's quintessential old-school bistro. Originally named Joséphine when it opened in 1898 and was frequented by intellectuals and the literati, the bistro has been run by the Dumonet family for the last 30-odd years – hence the double-barrelled name emblazoned on its chocolate-brown awning crowning wood-and-glass facade.

117 rue du Cherche-Midi, 6th, tel: 01 45 48 52 40, (M: Duroc or Falguière) Reliably good French bistro food, a genre that is increasingly difficult to find in Paris. Friendly service and enormous portions (some of the dishes are available in half-sizes), the Grand Marnier dessert soufflé is a must, and the duck confit is among the best in Paris. Not a “budget” bistro, but the quality of the food (and the neighborhood) merits the prices.

My Top Five Classic French Restaurants in Paris

Josephine Chez Dumonet is a place where I like to come hungry and with a group of people so we can order almost one of everything and share. It’s exactly how you’d expect an old-school French restaurant to look, so of course it’s warm and cozy. It’s known as being one of the best restaurants on the Left Bank so the crowd is a mix between tourists and regulars, and the service is great whether it’s your first or your 500th visit.

A gem of the Belle-Epoque, Joséphine will start you out with a terrine de foie gras that defies comparison, and finish you off with a boeuf bourguignon that would stop an army in its tracks. A welcoming staff and such a stellar menu of traditional French food comes at a steep price, of course, but any sticker shock at ordering the duck will be allayed by the dish itself. Best desserts (chocolate!!) in Paris

I think the best dessert I have ever had is the Grand Marnier Souffle at Chez Dumonet, Josephine. Their boeuf bourguignon is also excellent and their Milliefeuille dessert is amazing. The souffle and the milliefeuille are both big enough to share.
