Reviews Summary
Chez Janou is a highly praised Parisian bistro known for its authentic Provençal dishes and exceptionally generous portions, especially its legendary chocolate mousse. While the food and lively atmosphere receive widespread acclaim, some diners note occasional inconsistencies in service and recommend making reservations well in advance to avoid queues.
"We had an incredible experience here. The food was absolutely amazing—probably one of our favorite meals in Paris. The value was incredible too. We’ve had meals that cost double and weren’t even close to as good.
We ordered the liver, the duck (a must-try), the chocolate mousse, the crème brûlée, and the risotto—everything was absolutely delicious. The food was a 10/10 across the board. We’d definitely go back.
The staff had a lot of character. The queue manager was honestly pretty rude—very short with everyone waiting in line—but it was almost comical. Once you got inside, the whole vibe changed and the service was genuinely warm and attentive. They even comped our champagne that we had while waiting, which was a really nice touch.
We also got to sit outside, which made it even better. Overall, just an awesome experience and truly memorable food."

"We arrived for an early dinner reservation at 4 pm and were amazed at how busy the place was. Our server was excellent explained the menu. We ordered the risotto with scallops, the steak and the duck. Each item was delicious!! A bottle of wine as a side as well as some sardines and mussels!! We wished we had tried this place sooner. Our flight was leaving the following morning. Would go back on our next visit. If you can, make reservations online through their website."

"Just one word: amazing! The food is so so so good. The mussel was delicious (and I don't normally like mussels). The duck was also very good, perfectly cooked, and served with an amazing sauce. Also, the scallops risotto was a bang, perfectly prepared, flavors well balanced, totally worth it trying. And if you are like me, who was influenced on social media to try the chocolate mousse, do it. It is the most amazing mousse I ever had. Highly recommend the restaurant and can't wait to go back."

While this Provençal-themed restaurant, tucked away just north of Place des Vosges, lends itself beautifully to summer eating, it takes on an invitingly moodier atmosphere in the cooler months, when the terrace beckons with budlights and blankets, and the golden lighting and polished-wood tables within glow enticingly. As well as perennial South of France star dishes that will have you dreaming of your next Côte d’Azur holiday (ratatouille etc) the winter menu serves up a rich selection of mains, some of which have a lot of fun with their inspiration. Unique and Affordable Dining Experiences in Paris
Another Paris institution – this one in the enchanting maze-like lanes of the Marais district – Chez Janou is perhaps best known for its decadently rich mousse au chocolat – and not without good reason either!. Gorge on classic French bistro dishes like tuna carpaccio and sautéed calves liver before diving straight into the uber-gratuitous chocolate dessert. Guests who opt for this over the cherry clafoutis or apricot tart are served a great big dollop of the sweet stuff from an oversized bowl, which is then left on your table for you to continue to dig into until you can eat no more.

You don’t really come to Chez Janou for the food—classic Provençal fare like chou farci and moules gratinées—you come here for the chocolate mousse. You’ve likely seen it on social media: a waiter arrives with what is essentially a bottomless pot of fluffy and decadent chocolate mousse, scooping generous portions onto your plate until you’ve had your fill. It’s a great weekend brunch spot to hit with a group of friends (they’re open Sundays), where you can spread out on the sunny terrace or snag a booth inside to admire the retro Marcel Pagnol posters and candy-stripped lighting.
