I was recently directing a production of Romeo and Juliet at the opera house, a stone’s throw away, and we would dash in at the interval. The chefs at Piexes worked miracles preparing their amazing ceviches (€13 a portion) so we could get back in time for the next act. There’s delicate sea bream marinated in coconut milk, lemon grass and tamarind and succulent scallops with tangy passion fruit juice and avocado puree, but they also serve oysters, a spicy salmon tataki, and a theatrical smoked octopus with gnocchi and courgettes (€18).

Located on one of the busy side streets leading down into the Old Town, Peixes (Portuguese for ‘fish’) is another concept from local culinary kingpin Armand Crespo that nods to a different type of Mediterranean influence than other spots around town. A string of tables line the white-tiled wall of the narrow space, but the best seats are up at the bar. Watch the cooks prep the seafood-heavy small plates of fresh ceviche and tartare in a scene that would feel right at home in Lisbon.

Peixes means fish in Portuguese and Catalan – this restaurant’s menu is geared towards all the delights of the big blue. You’ll find delicious and fresh ingredients, a relaxed and inviting décor, professional service, and beautiful and tasty cuisine for a good price. The menu is mostly raw: ceviche, tartar, etc., along with some hot dishes like octopus with gnocchi and seasonal vegetables; stuffed cod; and various smoked fishes and surf-and-turf.

Despite offering mainly fresh seafood the restaurant Peixes excels at preparing Italian restaurant dishes. The restaurant merges seafood excellence with traditional Italian tastes by uniting fresh seafood ingredients with Italian culinary practices. You have two delicious options between seafood linguine and wood-fired seafood pizza at this establishment which create flavor harmonies that make you crave seconds.

Near the town hall and the opera house is Peixes – pronounced "pesh" (i.e. "fish" in Portuguese). In its small bistro interior with white and blue tiles and a very Mediterranean feel, fish and seafood cuisine is served in the form of tapas-style dishes (ceviche, carpaccio, fried fish, cod accras). This is a popular place, and spots on the terrace are hotly contested (no reservations!).

The restaurant offers a very traditional Mediterranean, French Feel, and is focused on fish and seafood cuisine, which is served in the form of tapas.

Crossing the Place Garibaldi, in a pedestrian alley at the back, we passed the Peixes restaurant. We were immediately drawn to its bright white and royal blue decor. And this menu, which combines Mediterranean and South American flavors to sublimate and modernize seafood, immediately appealed to us.

An absolute seafood delight awaits in this bustling hotspot – don’t be fooled by its seemingly touristy locale!. Expect a culinary adventure with fresh oysters, divine sauces, and innovative dishes like Tom Yum Pollock. Remember, queue early or risk missing out on this memorable Nice experience!

Peixes is the perfect place to stop for a Mediterranean-inspired meal before date night in Nice continues at the opera house nearby. Peixes doesn’t accept reservations, but the tapas-style ceviche and other seafood dishes are well worth the wait at this Michelin-starred Grecian bistro.

Another option is to just have some starters in a restaurant or one small plate – at Peixes they serve small plates for sharing but on my own I had just one for lunch and it was perfect. It was my first day and the food so amazing I had to go back for dinner another night (see below).
