And I don’t mean a restaurant with a view of the beach and the Mediterranean Sea—although Le Galet does provide that. I mean on the sand of the beach, literally on the coast of Nice. With this locale, you’re pretty much guaranteed a great time.

The Baie des Anges is lined with private beaches and seaside restaurants. One can try them all and find the best of the bunch, but Le Galet is closest to where I live. It manages to construct an elegant spot out of what is normally just rocks.

In Nice, it is impossible to use the expression “fine sandbanks”. All along the coast, the seashores are strewn with pebbles polished by the sea. What better name than “the pebble” to designate this pretty private beach.

I was amazed by the huge portion sizes and the tender lamb served with mashed potatoes was exceptional. You can’t miss the gigantic crème brûlée dessert, a must-try for all visitors!

Of the beach restos open in April, lunch at Le Galet is good. While you should generally avoid eating on Cours Saleya, Le Safari is the best cafe facing the market.
