Reviews Summary

Chez Pipo is a highly recommended local institution celebrated for its exceptional socca, prepared with a traditional crispy texture. Diners praise the authentic Niçois flavors, the laid-back terrace ambiance, and the friendly, multilingual staff. While most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, some mention limited menu options and the potential for long waits during peak times.

"A Must-Stop for Socca Lovers!

If you’re in Nice and haven’t been to Chez Pipo, are you even doing it right? This place serves up some of the best socca in town—crispy, warm, and absolutely delicious. Perfectly golden with that slightly smoky flavor that makes you wonder why you’re not eating this every day.

The terrace is a total vibe—laid-back, sunny, and ideal for kicking back with a cold beer and a plate of socca. Whether you’re people-watching or just soaking up the Riviera chill, it’s a great spot to relax.

Friendly staff, quick service, and great food. 10/10 would socca again."

"Great authentic Nicoise fare here at Chez Pipo! A terrific, tapas style menu, brings you the best portions of delightful local fare. Given the modest prices and fair portion sizes, it's easy to select 3 or 4 dishes to accompany your choice of wine, beer, and spirits without busting your waistline or your wallet.

I arrived around 6:30 to a few empty tables, but it filled up fast after that. The staff moved quickly to seat guests but you never feel rushed to finish and leave.

This is a terrific spot to taste Nice, located in the old city. A delight to walk to, and just a few streets from the port, which makes for a lovely walk afterwards.

Don't miss Chez Pipo!"

"Wow wow wow this place is amazing

I first got recomended this restaurant by a tour-guide when I asked for places that made genuinely good local food.

So I went there, got seated. The server noticed that I struggled with french so he switched to english. I said I wanted to practice my French so he not only switched back but even helped me with some words.

The first time I was here i ordered the following:

Tartinades (Tapenades Verte & Noire)
Socca anchois
With a aperol spritz as a drink
And for desert a lemon marangue pie with a glass of niçois rum as a digestif.

This meal was so good, and the staff so nice that despite me saying that I try a new place each night I during my stay, went here twice.

So I went again and the meal was just as if not more terrific.

This time, and what I'll be showing photos of, I ordered:

Tartinades (Thoïonade - Anchoïade)
Pissaladière
Socca anchois (because i couldn't get enough of it)
And a Panaché to drink

And for desert I had:
Tourte de Blettes
And glass of niçois rum as a digestif

All of the flavors work so well together, the food was obviously made to order and was super fresh, and the best part is that it really wasn't expensive for what you got.

and the staff (once again) was super kind and even remembered me:P

When I come back here, I'll visit Chez pipo.
When my friends say that they're going to nice, I'll recomend them Chez pipo.

I love this Chez pipo🫶🫶

Edit: i unknowingly went a third time because I went on a food tour:)
Not complaining, I couldn't have wished for a better end to my trip to nice.
Au revoir and see you lovely people next year:))"

Restaurants in Nice and the Eastern Cote d'Azur

There are plenty of places where you can sample socca in Old Town, but if you want to understand why so much fuss is made in Nice over the chickpea pancake, this out-of-the-way café behind the port is the place to go. As per usual, a batter of chickpea flour, water, olive oil, and salt is baked in giant copper tins in a wood-fired oven, but here, the cook expertly scrapes the surface of the nearly-cooked dough with a metal spatula so that it comes out extra-crispy. It's hard to explain why, but this is socca you can eat in large quantities even if you're not hungry: proof is the line on weekend nights, when people are willing to wait an hour or more for their petite (€3.50) or grande plates (€5.90).

The Best Restaurants on the French Riviera

A Niçoise institution for nearly 100 years, Chez Pipo specializes in socca, a chickpea-flour flatbread that comes out of the restaurant’s wood-fired ovens looking like a giant pizza. Their motto, “Aqui si mangia la socca,” says it all—socca is the only dish they serve, alongside a selection of Provençale spreads like tapenades made with anchovies, artichokes, olives, or sun-dried tomatoes. Seating is on a large terrace during summer months or in a wood-trimmed dining room for shade or winter dining.

The Best Places to Eat Socca on the French Riviera

Chez Pipo was founded in 1923 and the restaurant has not changed at all since the first socca was served here. The stone oven, a central feature of Chez Pipo, continues to turn out scores of socca per day that locals and tourists stop to savour amid the warm, friendly atmosphere of the restaurant’s interior, decked with photos of Nice during the Belle Epoque, or outside in the cool shady terrace. Lunch will cost around €10 (£9) – but keep in mind that the restaurant is always busy and doesn’t take reservations.

The best restaurants in Nice

Socca is Nice's traditional poor man's galette – something between bread and a pancake, made with chickpea flour and terribly more-ish, once you've added pepper. At Pipo's place – behind the port – they've been serving it since 1923, so are largely on top of the job. Niçois have long said Pipo's is the best there is, and the opinion holds good, despite a change of ownership.

There’s more than socca on the menu here, but it’s this classic Niçois street food snack that people travel from far and wide to eat at Chez Pipo. Since 1923 this casual canteen in Nice port has been serving up plates of the chickpea-flour pancake (and other dishes such as pizza slices and pissaladière, the local take on pizza), long before the streets around it started filling up with trendy boutiques and restaurants. Unlike some of its newer neighbours, a meal here won’t break the bank – a portion of socca costs €2.90 – so, unsurprisingly, tables fill up early.
