What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
La Boîte à Sardine offers a vibrant and authentic Marseille seafood experience with incredibly fresh catches and a quirky, nautical atmosphere. While some find the owner's personality strong, most diners are charmed by the unique setting and delicious, well-prepared dishes. It's a place that provides a memorable experience beyond just the food.
"Having read previous reviews of this restaurant, I was expecting great food and, maybe, a ”grumpy” proprietor. Well, I definitely got the former but thankfully not the latter. As a lone diner, I was treated warmly, kindly and with great humour. No hint of grumpiness! Lunch here was a memorable experience thanks to the aforementioned proprietor, the quirky space and the authentic, imaginative menu. I cannot wait to return to Marseilles so I can eat in this wonderful place again."
Martyn Comley
"Had an amusing and tasty lunch at this very original seafood restaurant. The decor is definitely off beat as is the service. But it is full of charm and humour. More pertinently the oysters were pure ocean deliciousness and the langoustine ravioli outstanding. The wine by the glass is correct. So is the price. Worth a visit but come with a tolerant attitude."
Manuel Malle
"The best parts of the meal were the oysters and fresh anchovies. While the rest of the menu was only so-so, the simple vibe and decor were fantastic. The place truly delivers on a great experience."

Restaurants in Marseille
Owner Fabien Rugi puts his formidable energy into serving the freshest possible, Mediterranean-inflected seafood dishes, so at this restaurant you—with or without the help of a waiter—choose your fish from the catch of the day on ice. You might start with the grilled shrimp, which is too good to have with anything but a squirt of lemon, perhaps followed by the grilled baby squid or Rugi's version of fish-and-chips—fried hake with crisp chickpea-flour pancakes (a Provence specialty) and house-made aioli. The well-priced wines flow freely, and everyone is happy as a clam.
‘Food is the key to understanding Marseille’: a gastronomic city tour | Marseille holidays
Up La Canebière, the city’s main artery, the white Saint-Vincent de Paul church (worth a visit for the improbable animals – bats and langoustines – carved on its doors) towers above La Boîte à Sardine. The chalkboard menu at this nautically kitsch space invites you to dive deeper into local cuisine than Marseille’s ubiquitous bouillabaisse. Co-owner and former fishmonger Fabien Rugi sources the freshest catch from small fishing operators.
The 10 Best Restaurants In Marseille, France
Though it’s called “tinned sardines” in French, this restaurant serves the freshest catch in town. Enigmatic co-owner Fabien sources seafood and fish from local fishermen. He’ll shuck platters of Camargue oysters or have chef and co-owner Céline make their signature beignet d’anémone (mackerel swimming in herb sauce) and house-smoked tuna.
Things only Marseille locals know (and now you do too)
Fish-friendly spots include the nautically kitsch Boîte à Sardines, the Marseille brasserie Paule et Kopa, and Chez Paul in the fishing port of Les Goudes.
