Reviews Summary

Café Comptoir Abel is celebrated for its authentic Lyonnaise cuisine and charming, vintage atmosphere. Diners frequently praise signature dishes like the quenelle and rich sauces, alongside the warm, accommodating service. However, some reviews mention inconsistencies in service, particularly during busy periods, and occasional issues with table allocation, though the food quality often remains a highlight.

"We chose this location because Anthony Bourdain highlighted it. It was beyond our dreams. The meal was exquisite (especially the morels and the tripe dishes). The decor inside was so kitschy and fun. Our waiter Fred was awesome! We also got a pot of wine to share (3 of us) which was perfect."

"Possibly had a bad night. Arrived for our reservation and the restaurant was nearly empty. They walked us to the back room and into a drafty corner with a wobbly sloped table despite other tables being available.
Our server was not good and it wasn’t the language barrier. The food runners were wonderful, taking time to talk to us, check on us. But I had to go into the middle kitchen section to ask for refills of rice and bread. Our server checked on other tables multiple times but not once with us. Only when our table was fully cleared did we manage to get more water.
It really sucked because the food was really good but for the price it was not a pleasant experience. We just wanted to eat and leave.

Had the beef with morels and the chicken with supreme sauce. Both were good and filling. The rice was delicious. Food arrived within 5 minutes of ordering.
Restaurant was 40% full around 8:45 on a Friday when we left."

Daniel H

"The bouchon is located just outside the touristy old town area, close to the riverbank. It seems quite popular, as both the indoor and outdoor seating filled up quickly at dinner time.

The service for the prix fixe menu is very fast. The meal began with appetizers of pâté and sausage, which were good but somewhat lacking in distinctive character.

The highlight of the meal was the summer salad plate with crayfish. However, at over €30 for a bowl, it felt quite pricey. In hindsight, I should have opted for the Lyonnaise salad instead, which is about half the price.

The main dishes leaned towards hearty and heavy, even with options like quenelle fish and chicken. The sauces were flavorful, rich, and paired well with either bread or rice, but the meat itself was rather bland.

The local dessert wine was fresh and pleasant. Dessert of the day and the ice cream were average, though the ice cream was refreshing on a hot summer day.
Service was attentive and friendly, with many locals and tourists dining, often accompanied by local friends.

We parked in a paid lot along the river and walked to the restaurant. There are also a few parking spots directly in front of the restaurant along the road.

Perhaps the food just isn’t quite to my taste, or maybe the heat and the long drive from Paris to Lyon affected my appetite.

It might be worth trying again in cooler weather if you’re in the neighborhood."

Restaurants in Lyon and the Alps

About 400 years old, this charming house is one of Lyon's most frequently filmed and photographed taverns. Simple wooden tables in wood-panel dining rooms, quirky art on every wall, heavy-bottom pot lyonnais wine bottles—every detail is obviously pampered and lovingly produced. The salade lyonnaise (green salad with homemade croutons and sautéed bacon, topped with a poached egg) or the rognons madère (kidneys in a Madeira sauce) are standouts.

A gastronomic guide to Lyon

Whether sitting amid the mahogany interiors of Café Comptoir Abel or the more contemporary stylings of Le Bouchon des Cordeliers, diners should expect punchy flavours at every turn. Onion, butter and offal dominate menus at these family-owned spots, where dishes are often served with a carafe of local wine.

Next, the pair visit another local restaurant in the 2nd arrondissement: Le Café Comptoir Abel. Citing themselves as «Le plus vieux bouchon lyonnais», Le Café Comptoir Abel is certainly one of the oldest bars in town and will likely stay around a while longer – thanks to Bourdain’s visit. On-screen we see he enjoys fresh pike folded in dough, with a creamy Nantua made with crayfish, Crème fraîche, white wine, and a splash of red wine.

Best Time to Visit Lyon

And of course, you can't visit Lyon without indulging in the local cuisine at a traditional bouchon (we like Café Comptoir Abel). These cozy, welcoming restaurants serve up classic Lyonnaise dishes, such as andouillette (a type of sausage), coq au vin (chicken stew), quenelles (fish or meat dumpling in a creamy sauce), and tarte praline (a pink praline tart). The perfect way to warm up on a chilly spring day!

Café Comptoir Abel (Abel Counter Cafe) serves a unique pike quenelle with a béchamel sauce that includes mushrooms instead of the traditional Nantua or crustacean sauce. The staff takes great pride in their quenelle, and rightly so. Established in 1928, Café Comptoir Abel is a cherished institution in Lyon.

Eating My Way Through Lyon: Anthony Bourdain-Style

On my final stop of my eating-like-Bourdain-through-Lyon venture, I went to Cafe Comptoir Abel. Similarly to Bouchon Comptoir Brunet, I was worried about being able to get a table here since it’s quite popular. However, I got lucky and was able to score a table for one upon arrival (sometime around 8PM).

The Restaurants On Parts Unknown

As Anthony Bourdain put it, a bouchon is a “uniquely Lyonnaise institution”. It is a laid-back pub/bistro with a “limited, usually old-school menu”. And if there is one iconic dish to represent Lyonnaise bouchon, it would be Quenelle de Brochet, which he sampled at Bouchon Comptoir Abel.
