Helmed by fine dining pioneer Pekka Terävä, Olo was named Restaurant of the Year by the Finnish Gastronomic Society in 2009 and earned its Michelin star in 2011. Located opposite the Market Square on Pohjoisesplanadi, next to the Presidential Palace, Supreme Court, and City Hall, Olo has long been a go-to for elegant, high-quality fine dining. Using the finest northern ingredients – from pike perch to black trumpet mushrooms – the chefs create deep, authentic flavours that are also light and refreshing, often adorned with edible flowers and leaves of wild herbs.

A stand-out restaurant experience, Yes Yes Yes occupies the space of the ex-McDonald’s site but is a far cry from the fast-food chain. Altogether there are nine restaurants that have received a MICHELIN Star in Finland, six of which are located in Helsinki: Palace with two stars, and the one-star restaurants of Finnjävel Salonki, Demo, Grön, Olo and The ROOM by Kozeen Shiwan. In addition to Nokka, the other Green Star restaurants in Helsinki include Grön, Nolla and Natura.

The next day, we went to Olo, one of the most famous restaurants in Helsinki. Later on during the trip, I met Erik Mansikka, the winner of Hell’s Kitchen Finland at a bar in Turku, he was incredibly impressed that we dined at Olo, and praised the restaurant. Like the French Laundry in California and Per Se in New York, Olo is quite expensive. Having said that, the food quality, food preparation and table presentation are all world class. The wine list is extensive and well thought out, although we thought the mark-ups were higher than usual.
