Try a citrusy grapefruit or gently roasted caramel IPA or join a tour at the Põhjala Brewery, the country’s first microbrewery in the historical Noblessner district. After a round, take a brisk walk to Telliskivi Creative City, a former industrial site turned artistic space featuring galleries, indie shops, restaurants, and the famed international photography art center and museum, Fotografiska Tallinn.

One of its first tenants is Põhjala, a craft brewery led by Brewdog alumnus Chris Pilkington. Its taproom has an array of brews, from Kosmos (a juicy, citrussy IPA) and Õhtu (a chocolatey porter) to Loojang (a complex barrel-aged barley wine), with half-pints starting from €3.50. It’s a delightful place to drink, with a suntrap of a balcony and live music in the evenings.

Open since December 2018, it’s a new outlet of Estonia’s first and largest craft beer producer…with its own sauna!. Better yet is the Texas BBQ cooked by a chef from two-Michelin-starred Swedish restaurant Fäviken. You can take tours of the facilities, drink beautiful beer and eat the likes of cured beef brisket smoked in hickory and pecan.

Currently, Koht’s Estonian lineup includes breweries like Käbliku Pruulikoda, Põhjala, Pühaste, and Veldi ja Tütred, to name a few. They keep an updated bottle and tap list on Facebook, so Koht’s regulars (of which there are many) can stay up to date on the newest brew offerings.

Põhjala is a household name in Estonian beer – you’ll see the brand in shops and on menus all over Tallinn. But for the best tasting experience, head to Põhjala Brewery & Tap Room – housed in a huge location near the coast in Kalamaja. Upstairs, you can order from 24 own-brewed beers on tap, while the kitchen serves a very convincing line in Texan BBQ. It was a hot summer’s evening, so our beer preference went to the refreshing Orange Gose, Sun City and Juicy IPA. But in winter, I have no doubt the dark beers are just as good.

Põhjala Brewery was the first in the new wave of Estonian microbreweries, starting as a gypsy brewery at the end of 2012. In April 2014, we started brewing in our own brewhouse in Tallinn's Nõmme district and at the end of 2018 moved to a new facility in Port Noblessner, featuring a 50 hl Rolec brewhouse and a tap room with Texas bbq-centered cuisine. We brew small batches of hand crafted ales, using the best malts, loads of mostly New World hops and a relentless passion for good beer.

The Guardian article does mention this excellent brewery, which has just opened a state-of-the-art new facility inside an old Tsarist submarine factory. You can see how their beer is made and then try it for yourself in their new tap room overlooking the factory floor, which has a vast selection of beer as well as Michelin-standard BBQ food that is smoked in the adjoining kitchen. I can recommend the brisket washed down with the Virmalised (northern lights) IPA.

If you are really into beer and high ceilings: Põhjala Tap Room. I don’t usually drink beer, but I made an exception in this case, as 1) I knew full well that this was a beer place 2) I was distracted by the amount of glorious space around me and 3) because the beer was very good. The main draw of the Tap Room is the Estonian hipster classic, Põhjala beer (there are 24 varieties), although I know some who go there for the simple but delicious barbeque.

It is worth coming here to drink beer and eat food that goes well with the various brews at Põhjala Tap Room, which is located directly above the brewery on the second floor. You can also find one of Finland’s most famous chefs, Kim Mikkola, who recently settled in Estonia, working at the restaurant Kampai by Kim Mikkola, or even enjoy unforgettable summer sunsets with cocktails from the KaiF bar.

This tap room is located within a 19th century building near the Noblesser waterfront. If you are looking for a place to hang with your friends and enjoy the summer sun and sea breezes then this is the place to go.

If you love craft beer and barbecue, you’re going to want to check out the tap room of Põhjala Brewery in the Port Noblessner waterfront area. The space is super cute, with sunny outdoor seating on a balcony if the weather is nice, and a sauna for rent inside if it's chilly. We tried two sour beers (raspberry and orange), which were light, juicy, and refreshing.

On the shore of the Gulf of Finland, a famous brewery called Põhjala Brewery & Tap Room is a place where we recommend you to go at least once during your stay in Tallinn. Located at Peetri 5, 10415, this bar in Tallinn is known for serving good local craft beers and also good barbecues. A great start to an evening of ambience in Tallinn by the water.

The tap-room-restaurant-brewery complex, built at the edge of Kalamaja in an old factory building at a cost of millions of euros, smells of quality in every aspect. The 24 beers on tap are mainly from the brewery itself, but also include Tanker and Puhaste beers. The bottle list of a few dozen beers continues the same distribution.

The previously mentioned beer restaurant Põhjala Tap Room offers good food, brews its own beer and also rents out a private sauna!. The sauna can be rented during the restaurant’s opening hours. The modern rooms can fit up to eight guests, all of whom can use the sauna room, showers and a breakroom with a sofa and chairs.

Finally, no jaunt in Tallinn is complete without stopping by the Põhjala brewery which is located a bit out of the center but is worth the experience. One of the most well-known breweries from Estonia, if not the most famous, it is an experience unto itself. Great beers and their weekend brunch are not to be missed.

Põhjala kickstarted the Tallinn Craft Beer Weekend, the largest international craft beer festival in the Baltic region celebrating its fifth anniversary in May 2019. The line-up consists of up to 50 of the best breweries from all over the world, including the brightest stars of the local brewing scene.
