Prague’s old Strahov Monastery, which is located close to Prague Castle, also houses a traditional brewery that specializes in the combination of classic Czech dishes with locally brewed beers. The brewery was only restored in 2000 in an extensive reconstruction process, after being closed down in 1907. The venue now offers space to a total capacity of 350 guests in its three locations: the brewery itself, the St. Norbert restaurant and the brewery courtyard.

Attached to a monastery founded in the early 12th century, the brewery itself has existed since at least 1400, when it was rented by a nearby town for “three-score of pepper and a fat rabbit,” as the story goes. Now famous for dark lager, it puts out a variety of seasonal bears each year.

Those wishing to continue on a hoppy pilgrimage should head out of Prague to Ceske Budejovice and the Budweiser Budvar brewery, for an in-depth tour of its beer-making traditions, ending up in the tasting room with the chance to pour your own foaming pint.

In fact, the building in which it is housed was founded by King Vladislav II in 1142 and the first records of a brewery on the site date from the 13th century, with Abbot Kaspar Questenberg modernising the brewery in 1698. Although the original brewery ceased operation in 1907, it underwent complete restoration almost a century later in 2000, giving you Klasterni Pivovar as it is today. The site consists of three sections; the courtyard, which is great place to enjoy your beer on a sunny day, St.Norbert restaurant which serves up Czech cuisine, and the brewery itself, which has the atmosphere of a small, traditional pub.

Perched atop the city part of the Strahov Monastery compound and the lush surrounding Petrin Hill, the Strahov Brewery is a delightful find in the bustling city of Prague. Just steps from the massive Prague Castle complex, the microbrewery serves about ten variations of St. Norbert beer (3 all year round and 7 seasonally) and the brews are all delicious and fresh with crisp hints of unique flavors. The unfiltered and unfermented brews include a bitter Amber blend that is similar to a German Märzen, or a German Lager beer, and a dark Vienna brew from Dunkel.

I'm sure you're all very much aware that monks were the first people to ever brew beer, so it shouldn't be too much of a surprise to find a brewery in this lovely monastery. While the monks themselves never get involved with the brewing here, preferring to leave it to the experts, I like to think they still enjoy the excellent beers that are produced on the premises. It's not often you get to drink in a monastery so while you're in Prague make sure you take the opportunity.

In Czech it is called Klašterní Pivovar Strahov, and you guessed it – it is located in a former monastery located just a few minutes walk from the Prague castle. This beautiful historical brewery is also a restaurant with a courtyard beer garden. The service and meals here are also top-notch which is reflected in the price, although it is well worth it for the quality and atmosphere.

If you’re looking for Czech beer and traditional Czech meals, you can’t miss Strahov Monastery’s brewery. This brewery and restaurant doesn’t make many lists, but it’s a surprisingly great place to settle down for a beer and some roast pork knee. When I visited for the first time, we ordered their tartar (an absolute classic for Czechs!), the schnitzel and the pork knee.

This historic brewery is a cosy spot to enjoy a pint of beer brewed with centuries-old recipes. The signature St. Norbert beer is a must-try, and the views of the monastery gardens make the experience even better. We found it to be the perfect stop after enjoying the panoramic views from the nearby Petrin Lookout Tower.

The Strahov Brewery, located in the grounds of Strahov Monastery, produces its own beer, Svatý Norbert, which you can enjoy on a pleasant summer terrace. The selection includes semi-dark amber, dark, wheat, or IPA beers, and throughout the year, they also brew seasonal beer specials.

Arguably the best beer in Prague is located in one of the most unlikely places. Only a stone’s throw away from Prague Castle is the medieval, 12th-century Strahov Monastery. Founded in 1149, Strahov Monastery stands as one of the oldest most renowned compounds in Prague.

Strahov Monastery brewery – This 17th-century brewery run by monks reopened as a craft brewery in 2000. The beer lineup at St. Norbert’s, the restaurant within Strahov, is extensive, but it surprisingly doesn’t include a pilsner—the country’s pride and joy!

If you enjoy very good craft beer, I strongly recommend the Strahov Monastery Pivovar (beer garden) in the Castle District. The food we had there was also excellent.
