If I needed any more evidence that a serious transformation of the restaurant scene was under way, I found it at Pohlreich’s Café Imperial. Fifteen years ago, you never would have heard the words celebrity and chef uttered in succession during a discussion of Czech cuisine. But as I conversed with Pohlreich over lunch in the main dining room, it became clear to me that I was sitting in front of the country’s most famous chef.

Café Imperial is Prague’s most famous coffee house – and has been for more than 100 years. This breathtaking art nouveau café, housed inside the historic and luxurious Art Deco Imperial Hotel, features magnificent ceramic mosaics, beautifully tiled walls and pillars, and floral and natural details. Beyond the splendid atmosphere, café Imperial is known for its outstanding hospitality and perfectly classic European and American dishes – from English Breakfast to Eggs Benedict, and duck breast with cherry sauce to veal schnitzel.

One of the grandest cafes in Prague and situated in the Imperial Hotel, Cafe Imperial brings back the grandeur of the turn of the century in Prague. With millions of ceramic tiles covering the walls and the pillars of the cafe in floral and animal designs depicting oriental or Moorish scenes, the cafe has long been one of the most sought after establishments in Prague. Although the cafe has been remodeled it still offers a feeling of faded glory.

And the kulajda is probably the Czech-est of all Czech soups: a creamy potato soup with mushrooms, dill, vinegar and a poached egg, this is so good my mouth is literally watering as I write this. And the version at Café Imperial, run by one of the most famous Czech TV chefs, Chef Pohlreich (he ran the Czech version of Kitchen Nightmares), is a great, approachable one. Now, at CZK 115, this is nowhere near being the cheapest soup in town.

If you do fancy a more English style breakfast, get yourself to the institution that is Café Imperial!. An art deco gem, the hotel's café gets pretty busy but we managed to walk in and get seated fairly quickly. I had the English breakfast of toast, eggs, bacon, beans and sausage, while he went for the American version with hash browns.

When we travel, we always look for beautiful cafés, and Café Imperial is one of the best we’ve found in Prague. It’s right up there with iconic spots like the New York Café in Budapest or Café Central in Vienna. The Art Nouveau interior, with its high ceilings and colourful mosaic-tiled walls and pillars, is a real feast for the eyes.

Finally and for dessert, I’m served an apple strudel, another staple that I’ve also enjoyed in its classic version at Cafe Imperial. At V Zatisi, it comes with its homemade vanilla ice cream and an artistic presentation. And for the icing on the proverbial sundae: a glass of late harvest of the Poddvorov region, also from Moravia.

The Imperial hotel’s restaurant, and I consider this one an alternative to Café Savoy. Compared to the predecessor, this one is a Michelin restaurant and is even in a higher price range. However, that should not stop you from trying their establishment at least once and experiencing the Art Deco style of the 1920s.

Of all Prague’s famous cafés, Café Imperial (Na Poříčí 1072/15) is perhaps the café that best reflects the Modernist wave the city experienced at the beginning of the twentieth century. A truly luxurious establishment, it’s legendary for its square tiles with low reliefs, use of wood and allegorical sculptures.
