The whole Punta Gorda peninsula of Cienfuegos is a legacy of grander times…with 'The Blue Palace' built by a wealthy tobacco plantation owner .and now a hotel sitting next to the gracious Cienfuegos Yacht Club, on a boulevard of once grand homes. The Cienfuegos Yacht Club is notable more for its remarkable position and architecture than its variable quality food – but like its neighbouring Valle Palace, the location on the Punta Gorda is hard to beat. Seeing the decay of former architectural magnificence reminded me that these were buildings built on the work of slavery.

Punta Gorda is the old quarter of the upper class of Cienfuegos characterized by houses of luxury and palaces with turrets highlighting the Palacio Azul and the Yacht Club Cienfuegos, but most resplendent and attractive is a bit below, the exotic Palacio de Valle, a marvel of architecture and one of the emblematic buildings of the city of Cienfuegos, its construction began in 1913 and was completed in 1917, the work was entrusted to Italian architect Alfredo Colli and the foreman Juan Suarez at a cost a million and a half pesos for that time.

Previously known as the Yacht Club, the Neo-Baroque build- ing was renovated in 1982 and became the headquarters of the XIV Central American and Caribbean Games. The central building has a restaurant, billiard room, snack bar, terrace, gallery and sports and nautical products store. On the outside, there are areas for games, rental cars and motor- cycles, swimming pool, tennis court and the beach.

Before 2003 Cienfuegos had a reputation for teenage prostitutes. Girls would skip school to go to the airport three times a week for the flights from Canada and meet Canadian men. Beginning in 2003 the police cracked down on prostitution and now Cienfuegos has a reputation for the most vigorous anti-prostitution police patrolling in Cuba (and there are no longer flights from Canada).

The capital city of the province is also called Cienfuegos and was founded by French settlers in 1819. Until 2011 Cienfuegos was the smallest province in Cuba (excluding the city of Havana and the Isla de la Juventud) with an economy almost entirely dedicated to the growing and processing of sugar. Sugar mills and sugarcane plantations dot the landscape.

Buildings such as the Ferrer Palace, the Cienfuegos Club, the Jagua Hotel and the Valle Palace are other jewels of Cienfuegos architecture that any visitor can discover on a tour of the city. And they are not the only ones. Not surprisingly, its preserved historic center was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

I’d read that Punta Gorda was an upmarket residence well worth a visit, so off we went to investigate. It’s a bit of a walk along the Malecon passing some lovely small hotels including Club Cienfuegos.
