For somewhere that's set firmly in the modern day (and to see what Havana's future is all about), head to O'Reilly 304, a funky gin and tapas bar set up by owner José Carlos. Downstairs is packed with locals and tourists, eyeing up the elaborate cocktails mixed by bartender Wilson Hernandez (among the best you'll see or taste anywhere in the world), while upstairs, surrounded by bare-brick walls, patrons enjoy innovative tapas dishes such as ceviche, croquetas, or tacos (between CUC$3 and CUC$6 per dish).

This paladar is known for its excellent food and cocktails, with the mango daiquiris a particular favorite among customers. The highly-skilled bartenders can prepare anything you want, so take the opportunity to branch out from the rum-based drinks that you can find all over town. It’s best to come here when you are up for a party, because the noise can rule out a relaxed conversation.

On the Old Havana side of things, with the Parque Central as your starting point you’ll be steps away from iconic venues like the Gran Teatro de la Habana (ideal if you could catch a performance there) El Floridita bar, Sloppy Joe’s and a good array of popular paladares and bars like O’Reilly 304, Dona Eutimia or Jama, Cuba’s avant-garde Japanese fusion restaurant with a Cuban twist (tastefully eccentric). After passing the Museum of Fine Arts, and then past the Floridita in front, you come across Obispo street, one of city’s busiest arteries, historically famous for its succession of shops and the influx of Cuban shoppers, an excellent opportunity for another dose of pure "cubanía" at its most authentic.

The owners of the restaurant located at 304 O’Reilly Street didn’t put much thought into the name of their establishment. But still, 304 O’Reilly is quite the culinary gem. It would be financial suicide for restaurants in Havana to offer an exclusively vegetarian menu (although there are a couple of places that are trying), and yet 304 O’Reilly manages to offer a comprehensive vegetarian selection that doesn’t sacrifice taste.

One of our favorite spots for both food and drink is 304 O’Reilly. Located in a converted privately-owned apartment on O’Reilly street, this place is hopping all the time. We were lucky enough to sneak in at 5pm without a reservation, and sat at the bar where we watched the bartender make some very creative typical beach drinks, like mojitos, margaritas, daiquiris and pina coladas.

If you like O’Reilly 304, one of the coolest bars/restaurants in town, you’ll love their newest venture, just across the street. El Del Frente means “the one in front”. The menu is similar–which is great considering that O’Reilly’s has one of the best ceviches in town, as well as the best tacos.

This place should be on any Havana itinerary, purely for the mind-blowing Cubanitos (it’s a like a Bloody Mary but with rum). They came in large jars with pickles, peppers, and celery, and were delicious. Like a lot of places in Cuba, the walls are covered with art, paintings and installations.

Known as one of the best paladars in Havana, O’Reilly 304 serves great food and cocktails. What’s so great about this bar is that the bartenders are pretty skilled and know how to prepare a variety of different drinks. Ask them to make you whatever you want and they’ll happily oblige.

This little spot became so popular they opened a second restaurant right across the street, El del Frente. You can find everything from steak with grilled okra to seafood dishes with plantain chips. There is a mix of typical Caribbean food, as well the tacos and pasta.

I must admit the first time I visited I thought it was going to be all hype. After it was covered in the New York Times it seemed no visiting journalist could find a decent restaurant in Havana other than this. You won’t find Cubans here but the food is great.

This hippest bar-cum-restaurant is famous for its sublime gin-based cocktails and ceviche. You won’t find a better cocktail anywhere in Havana. Wedged between two dilapidated buildings in Old Havana, tourists often miss this place.

Having ticked both bars off your ‘to do’ list, there are numerous more interesting places to drink in Havana including El del Frente, Madrigal, Espacios, La Guarida, paZillo, Bar de Luca, Bar Monserrate & O’Reilly 304.

We both opted for fresh grilled white fish that came with an abundance of vegetables (eggplant, onions, peppers, etc..) that were also grilled. The fresh cucumber juice was so refreshing and hit the spot.

The workers worked it out for my friend and I though and made room for the two of us at the bar. We loved the music, the menu options, and the drinks. They even gave me a flower at the end of my meal!

Another trendy café in the heart of Old Havana, O’Reilly 304 serves some lovely, innovative dishes and possibly the best lemonade in Havana. The café has a wonderful vibe, especially in the evening.

The best thing about this bar is that you do not need to follow specific options, but you can tell the bartender about your drink. They are highly skilled and prepare the right drink for anyone.

The very trendy O’Reilly 304 in Old Havana was a treat of Latin influenced foods and cocktails. For something more traditional, the nearby Nao Bar served up mouthwatering Cuban dishes.

I am so glad this paladar was recommended to me before I left for Cuba!. We had our last dinner in Cuba here and it was one of the best. I will say it, is a very cozy restaurant.
