One of the better state-owned restaurants, El Aljibe offers a pretty open-air setting and live music while you dine. The criollo fare here is reasonably priced and served gracefully, and the place is always filled to the brim with clued-in diners (including such celebrities as Omar Linares, Cuba's finest former baseball player), as well as bus loads of tourists. The roast chicken in bitter-orange sauce, served with black beans and rice is famous, and it's worth coming here just to try it.

Among our favorite dishes: charcoal-grilled chicken at El Aljibe, served family-style with a heaping dish of plantains on the side. Try the meltingly tender ropa vieja (a traditional pulled beef and tomato dish), onion-rich vaca frita (“fried beef”) and chicken soup adorned with picture-perfect fresh vegetables at El Rum Rum de La Habana, in the Viejo Habana (Old Havana) neighborhood. Savor the colorful ceviche and tuna tiradito (slices of raw fish, in this case brightened with apple vinaigrette and cubes of mango) at La Guarida, hidden in a charmingly dilapidated townhouse built circa 1903.

EL ALJIBE – A Cuban institution, El Aljibe is arguably the most iconic place to eat food in Havana and visiting is highly recommended. The approximately 65-year-old secret chicken recipe is considered the finest in the world, and has been eaten by the likes of President Jimmy Carter and Jack Nicholson. The traditionally styled cottage location occupies vast space, but booking a table can be difficult as many cruise ship and tour buses take passengers to the restaurant.

Each day, it serves hundreds of pounds of perfectly roasted chicken, savory boiled rice and spicy cooked black beans, and the service is as fast and professional as a Parisian brassiere or New York grill. It's one of the most popular restaurants in Cuba, not only for tourists but also diplomats, foreign businessmen and the small number of local elite.

Opened as a family restaurant in 1946, this restaurant has charmed Cuban and foreign taste buds ever since with just one dish – its all-so-tasty, all-you-can-eat roasted chicken, cooked with the Garcia family’s secret recipe. DINNER El Aljibe (00 53 7 204 1583), between 7th Avenue and 24th Street in Miramar, is quite a distance from Old Havana, so best to grab a local taxi, which will take you around 20 minutes. The restaurant is family-run and famous for its great chicken - a recipe that has for the last 15 years been a family secret. For a mere CUC$12 you get all-you-can-eat chicken, rice, beans and salad.

First opened in 1993, El Aljibe is a direct descendant of a rustic farm restaurant called Rancho Luna, founded by two brothers, Pepe and Sergio García, in 1946. Rancho Luna is located in the city of Guanajay, 50 km (31 miles) west of Havana, and built a formidable reputation on the strength of one plate, Pollo a lo tinguaroOr grilled chicken glazed in a “secret” bitter orange sauce.

This vast open-air, state-owned restaurant has remained faithful to its beginnings for the past six decades. Despite its low prices, the all-you-can-eat chicken Asado with rice, beans, fried plantains, and fries continues to lure tourists and residents alike. You’ll be entertained by strolling musicians as you eat in a leather-backed wooden chair tucked under the thatch.

A series of “ranchones” made of wood and thatch that make up El Aljibe turn the hectic life of the city into the quiet atmosphere of the country side. To support this feeling, the place is decorated with tables made of wood, traditional farmer’s stools and is heavily ornate with plants. On the corner of 7th Avenue and 22 Street in Miramar, is El Aljibe.

We have various places included in our trip for lunch: El Templete, La Mina, El Palenque, El Aljibe, and at the UBPC Organopónico Vivero Alamar. All of our evenings are free except for one so hopefully we will also find a few opportunities for a good dinner in Havana. The night we are not free, for our farewell dinner, we will be dining at El Mercurio.

This is a family recipe created at the original Finca El Aljibe restaurant that delighted visitors in the 1940s. The recipe seemed lost in time but reappeared at the new restaurant in Miramar, Havana, managed by the same family. The chicken is roasted brown on the outside but juicy and soft inside.

This restaurant serves delicious grilled chicken with an orange sauce with unlimited white rice, black beans, plantains, fries and salad. The grilled fish is very good as well. There is no children's menu however kids can split a meal.
