Best known for excellent beers brewed on the premises, all three of the Pivnica Medvedgrad locations serve up roast meats, goulash, and beans and sausage, accompanied by a range of salads. The Ilica location and its cavernous beer hall—replete with long wooden tables, high leather-backed chairs, and wood-beamed ceilings—is about a 10-minute walk west from the main square. It’s very popular and gets busy, but there are usually enough tables to go around.

Approaching the entrance to Medvedgrad on Ilica's shopping street, you could be walking into a department store rather than a bar. Upon entering the bar you'll see the beer garden ahead, full of chunky wooden tables and benches. Enclosed and covered with foliage, this is a proper city centre beer garden and a great find.

Also a Medvedgrad location, the highlight of this pub is its large back terrace, which gives one the impression that they are drinking in a large treehouse. We visited during the day and so there were few enough people so that we could avoid the smokers, but I could see this place getting pretty hazy at night. They offer the same comprehensive menu that we found at Mali Medo, including the Pub Goulash, a Croatian specialty.

We are at the famous Pivnica Medvedgrad, where the best craft beer is served. After the beer break, cross the street and a few blocks away fall into an illusion trap and test your senses at the house number 72, in the Museum of Illusions, one of the unique Zagreb museums. After the Museum of illusions, it's the time to hop on a tram and visit Pivana, one of the oldest bars in Zagreb.

This part of town was constructed in the late 19th century but a barman, Melvin, at the Pivnica Medvedgrad tells us the clustered housing leant itself well to Communist-era living. (We also discovered he had been a Young Pioneer when Croatia was part of Yugoslavia, pre the 1990s Balkan Wars.)

This is large pub and beer hall is located only 5 minutes’ walk from the main square. They serve large portions of pub food and Croatian specialities together with their own in-house brewed beers. The happy hour takes place everyday from 17.00 to 18.00.

Zlatni Medvjed by Medvedgrad Brewery is an excellent craft Czech-style lager (let’s just call it a pilsner) for such an inexpensive price.
