What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Diners praise Gostionica Ficlek for its delicious, authentic Zagreb cuisine and generous portions that taste like homemade comfort. The cozy atmosphere and views of the cathedral are highlights for many. However, some reviews mention inconsistent service, with a few experiencing indifference or delays, and one reviewer found the food to be bland.
"Outstanding lunch! Veal & turkey were so tastefully prepared!! I ordered the fragrant warm homemade bread at the end just to wipe up all the flavours of the sauce from my veal dish! It felt like grandma’s love in a dish! Absolutely delicious! We had no wait cos we were there just as it opened but others were told that tables inside were reserved!!"

"If you're planning to dine at Gostionica Ficlek, make sure to book in advance — this place is popular for good reason. We made our reservation for 5 PM just to be sure we’d get a seat, and by the time we arrived, the place was already buzzing.
The menu is extensive, offering a wide variety of traditional Croatian dishes, so there's something for everyone. From hearty stews to grilled meats and comforting sides, everything is prepared with care and authenticity.
Be warned: the portions are massive. We were glad we didn’t over-order, because even the single dishes could easily be shared. The staff were friendly and helpful, and didn’t hesitate to offer suggestions or explain the menu.
The highlight was definitely the quality of the food — especially the meats. Every bite was rich, flavorful, and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. Out of all the places we tried in Zagreb, Ficlek had the best food, hands down.
The atmosphere is warm and cozy, with a rustic charm that adds to the experience. It feels like a local gem where tradition is honored and the kitchen truly shines.
Highly recommended — just don’t forget to make a reservation, and come hungry!"

Restaurants in Zagreb and Environs
A creation of the brilliant minds at Pod Zidom, this restaurant between the Zagreb Cathedral and Dolac Market is the city's first to serve only authentic Zagreb fare prepared in traditional ways (think pasta with cabbage, Zagreb-style meat cuts, and soups just like Croatian grandmas make them). The interior design is modern but also features old-school touches like classic masonry heater tiles. If you grab a seat on the outdoor terrace, you'll be treated to views of the Zagreb Cathedral.
Zagreb's local cuisine
Try it for yourself at Gostionica Ficlek, a newly opened, exciting restaurant serving up only the most authentic Zagreb cuisine. Ficlek uses house-cooked ham, bought fresh from the nearby Dolac Marketplace (also known as "the stomach of Zagreb") for their delicious cutlets.
Byblos - Restaurant - Zagreb
Although the word “ficlek” in Zagreb’s dialect means a small piece of something, we couldn’t say the same for the portions that they serve in this little bistro, close to the central market. On the opposite, they are quite abundant. Here they cook the traditional dishes from Zagreb, which are similar to the Austrian kitchen, as chicken ajngemahtec (traditional chicken soup), tafelspitz, faširanci (traditional patty), sarma, breaded chicken, bean salad, and for dessert the dumplings filled with seasonal fruit, kaiserschmarrn (a lightly sweetened thick pancake torn in pieces), schupfnudel (a type of dumpling or thick noodle) with poppy seeds or walnuts.
41 Best Zagreb Restaurants for Foodies in 2025
Ask anyone in the city to help you find “najbolji restorani u Zagrebu” (or “best restaurants in Zagreb” in Croatian) and Ficlek will be one of the first names they mention. Located right under Zagreb’s oldest farmer’s market, Dolac, Gostionica Ficlek serves up traditional Croatian cuisine “the way Croatian grandmas once did” – which is their motto, and it’s perfectly fitting!. This is one of my favorite places to go when I’m craving something homemade and delicious.

A tiled green bar and on-trend navy walls juxtapose with hanging charcuterie, gingham tablecloths,a huge dresser lined with crockery and a well-stocked wine fridge.
