Just outside the Palace on one of the narrow medieval streets slanting away from Narodni trg, Zinfandel Food and Wine Bar lays down a contemporary gauntlet to all the ancient stonework of Split’s Old Town, with matt-black interior, clever lighting and suave design touches. Chefs from Italy, France, Japan, Morocco, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, the UAE and Croatia, awarded with Michelin stars, Gault&Millau caps and other important culinary awards, filled 18 Split restaurants with their evenings: Adriatic Sushi&Oyster Bar, Artičok, Central-Hotel Santa Lucia, Chops Grill - Steak&Seafood, Dujkin dvor, Dvor, Méditerranée - Hotel Ambasador, Noir, Noštromo, Olive Tree, Pandora Greenbox, Pinku Fish&Wine, Štorija, Šug, Zinfandel, Zoi, Zrno Soli i Zora was where it was especially cheerful. The Mediterranean Women Chefs initiative was occupied by six chefs, and their dishes were accompanied by top Kvarner wines under the guidance of five top sommeliers.

Tucked into a narrow stone alley just steps from the Riva, Zinfandel is where I really started to understand Croatian wine. The bistro leans heavily into its namesake grape (yes, Zinfandel was born here), but the wine list goes well beyond—highlighting boutique producers from across the country, with plenty available by the glass. It’s approachable, well-curated, and the perfect place to get to know Croatian wine without needing a sommelier certification to navigate it.

This cute little wine bar and restaurant is set in the tiny streets of Diocletian’s Palace, we stumbled across it one evening as there was live music playing and a great atmosphere about the place. Turns out they have live music here every evening in the summer and so it does get very busy. Zinfandel’s menu boasts modern Dalmatian cuisine using locally sourced produce, such as lamb and truffles and a huge selection of carefully curated wines.

This has all but changed in the last few years with restaurants like Zinfandel, Corto Maltese, Articok, O’Zlata, Mazzgoon and Bokeria (just to name a few); then, even more recently we have had some true concept restaurants open with likes of Terminal F, Bokamorra Pizza & Cocktails and To Je Tako. There is now plenty on offer to satisfy most any gastronomer, but there is one aspect which still hasn’t quite caught up – international cuisine.

Back in Split old town, whether it’s dinner and live music you want, or perfectly presented flights of Croatian wine, you can find it at Zinfandel Food & Wine Bar. In Diocletian’s Palace in Split there are so many places to choose from, but this must be one of the best. Very cozy interior with great live music performed by a very talented young lady and a guitarist. Food is delicious, imaginative, well cooked, and beautifully presented.

Zinfandel is a good place to get a nice glass/bottle of wine. The menu is seasonal so it is always changing. We had some kind of soup, some amazing pasta and to die for dessert.
