An authentically-Dalmatian gem, Konoba Fetivi is an informal dining experience that places the region's bountiful ingredients centre stage and presents them unfussily and respectfully. Run by a family who have been in the neighbourhood for 300 years, they serve local specialities, including many meat dishes, but the seafood takes pride of place on the menu. Wholly dependent on the season and what's been caught, the seafood menu alters by the day (as do individual dishes such as the shared seafood platter).

Many modern restaurants in Split have tried to recreate the history of the city (with varying results) but there is no substitute for authenticity. The family behind Konoba Fetivi has been living in this neck of the woods for more than three centuries and with time comes experience and knowledge, all of which are manifested on a menu that stays true to Dalmatian heritage. This is a restaurant that understands what makes Split tick and serves it in abundance, all at refreshingly inexpensive prices.

Konoba Fetivi, an authentic “konoba” (inn or tavern) run by the Fetivi family who have strong roots in the region, serves excellent traditional cuisine. Here, guests can savour local meat and fish specialities, including old family recipes such as tagliatelle with richly flavoured venison ragu, monkfish with potatoes and a superb apple strudel.

It sits just outside the tourist crush of the Riva in the old Varoš neighborhood — a quieter corner of the city where life still feels lived-in. This is classic Dalmatian cooking, well-sourced seafood, and time-honored recipes. I came for the grilled fish — caught that morning, simply seasoned, and cooked over an open flame — and stayed for the black risotto, rich and briny with cuttlefish, and the slow-cooked pašticada that tasted like it had been simmering for hours (because it had).

Located right by the harbor, Konoba Fetivi is the ultimate family-run tavern that’s bursting with tradition. They’ve totally mastered the art of serving up seafood that’s not only fresh, but also super satisfying, all while sticking to classic recipes that have been passed down through generations. When you place your order, the staff will bring a tray of fresh-caught fish and seafood for you to pick just what you’re craving.

Konoba Fetivi has been featured regularly over the past few years in the Michelin Guide, being awarded the Bib Gourmand for value and quality. It’s a very popular fish and seafood restaurant with an open courtyard, just a short stroll from the waterfront. It is an authentic konoba which offers a selection of fresh, locally caught fish which the owner and chef purchase daily from the fish market.

If you want to experience a 100% authentic meal in an original Dalmatian tavern, Fetivi is the place for you. This is the perfect spot to relax in their small, warmly decorated space with wood planks and guitars on the walls, rustic wooden tables, and a terrace that changes style depending on the season. The tavern prepares excellent traditional Dalmatian cuisine at more than affordable prices.

Fetivi is a small, family-run tavern with a friendly atmosphere and excellent food. Located close to the Matejuska, a small fishing harbor west of Split’s seafront promenade, Fetivi serves traditional Dalmatian food, like fried small oily fish, octopus, chickpeas stew, black risotto, various grilled dishes, etc. Expect to pay around €15 to €40 ($16.50 – $44, £13 – £34) per dish.

While I will always be a foodie at heart and long for a larger selection of international cuisine and experimental gastronomy, I am happy to see a ‘nod’ given to the traditional Konobas which will always embody Croatian cuisine. Konoba Fetivi received one of the four Bib Gourmand awards for quality food at a reasonable price (less than €35/260 HRK). Michelin had this to say:

We are always happy to return to konoba Fetivi because we know that we will enjoy once again the authentic Dalmatian cuisine. Traditional dishes and local specialties without complicated culinary techniques, generous portions, relaxed family atmosphere and decent prices. We boarded the ferry back to Split in the late afternoon and enjoyed dinner at Konoba Fetivi. This is one of the most down to earth Michelin rated restaurants, in a laid back environment with some of the best, most fresh seafood you will ever enjoy!
