Walking through an 800-year-old wall to find a secret swimming spot across the sea from a cursed island sounds like a fairy tale, but in Dubrovnik such places actually exist—and there are two of them. One of the Buža (hole-in-the-wall) bars is marked by a wooden sign pointing toward "cold drinks." The other has no signage at all; you just walk through a doorway in the city walls. With tables arranged on a series of terraces built into the rocks and jazzy soundtracks to go along with stunning vistas, both bars make a great place to stop for a drink or a swim; you can jump right off the rocks in front of the bar.

These rocks below the city walls, accessed by a doorway off ulica od Margarite, are something of an iconic spot for swimming and sunbathing (or sipping a drink or two), though they’re not quite the (relatively) hidden gem they once were. There are a few small tables with sun umbrellas, served by a small bar, and a few concreted areas where you can try to fit a towel or just jump off into the sea. The rocks at Buža are not sheltered, so it’s not the best choice for kids.

When the glow of the sun begins to lessen, visitors make a beeline for Buza – two bars cut into the rockface on the side of the City Walls. It’s the perfect place to drink up the sunsets with a cocktail. Although touted as something of a ‘hidden-bar’, these days, Buza is nobody’s best-kept secret, and tends to pack up with punters pretty quickly, so if you’re chasing a sundowner, arrive way before sunset to guarantee a table.

This makeshift open-air bar (working summer-only) is madly popular, but that’s part of the fun. Accessed through a tiny doorway in the seaward-facing city walls, the view that opens before you is sublime – just sea and sky, with tables arranged on a series of levels on the rocks. You can even clamber down to the water for a swim.

Early evening, or sunset, is the best time to grab a drink when temperatures are getting cooler and you get to see the colors of the sky change. During the day, Buža Bar is popular place for people to enjoy cocktails in between dips in the ocean.

The secret, not so secret ‘Hole-in-the-Wall’ Buža Bar is located between Svetog Petra and Sveta Margarita on the south side of the Old Town. Technically speaking they’re two Buža Bars but if you want a dip in the Adriatic Sea whilst sipping on wine or cold beer during sunset, this is the best instagram spot for sure. To add, there is a limited drinks menu, it’s cash only and there are no toilets so go easy on the alcohol.

While walking around Old Town, we happened to stumble by a bar hidden down some steps and perched along the rock cliff overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Named Buža Bar, this place definitely has some of the best views. There were no seats left by the time we got there mid-afternoon, and the bar only accepts cash (which we had none of), so we didn’t stay for a drink but we did take a few photos and enjoyed the views.

I'd skip drinks here as it's a bit on the pricier end, but follow the flocks of tanned youths down to the cliffs, from which you can dive into the Adriatic!

With some of the most stunning vantage points of the sea, you will not mind that your drink options are limited. (They have to hike the supplies into the walls and down to the bars.)
