We finished our night at nearby Salvo Patria (Calle 54a, 4-13), another success story which has moved to a bigger location to keep up with demand and, like all good hipster bars, makes its own-label craft beer.

Above the 7th Street in Chapinero Alto is Salvo Patria, run by Juan Ortiz and Alejandro Gutierrez. This version of the cafe opened in 2013; prior to that, Ortiz spent eight years working in the Melbourne independent specialty coffee scene, including at Liar Liar in the Hawthorn suburb. He then moved back to Colombia with a plan: to recreate the Melbourne-style cafe in Bogotá, while maintaining a firmly Colombian identity by only using Colombian coffee.

I can never decide where to go, so I rotate between Mesa Franca and Salvo Patria. Both of these guys are in our neighborhood and always deliver quality, local-style dishes with a twist. For example, Mesa Franca might serve mussels with chicharrón, and on Thursday nights, it has a DJ play salsa while they roast suckling pig.

It’s a really cool neighborhood restaurant where you can find interesting takes on Colombian cuisine. Every dish we ordered was delicious, especially the vegetarian dishes. It’s more on the pricey side for a backpacker budget, but definitely worth it if you’re a foodie.
